Obviously slide tackle is important but it is not the most effective way of defending. If a player goes to the ground easily then that is bad decision making.

As somebody whose own level was risible at best, but who's been watching the game closely for more than fifty years… if I can make a modest remark. I think you're at cross purposes, but you're both making valid remarks.
As a final recourse, the slide tackle when timed well is an excellent weapon for a defender to have in his arsenal. But it should be a final recourse. Aymeric's an intelligent defender, but in my opinion, he doesn't have it. His timing is slightly out when he tries it (and he doesn't like being forced into it — for Vin, it was meat and drink). So he either gets completely skinned, or he gives away a free kick in a dangerous area. And gets carded for his pains.
Now take the case of Tony Book. You very rarely saw him make a slide tackle. I'm not sure I ever saw him make a slide tackle. What he was brilliant at — one of the best — was jockeying his winger into slowing down — close enough so that his opponent would feel crowded, but far enough away that it would be very difficult to skin him — so that ultimately Skip would allow his defence to get back in shape, and the attacking player would be intimidated into playing the ball inside.
A great defender's got to have it all in his armoury. Starting with positional awareness, and that means a more-or-less 360° grasp of what's going on around him.
