Jude Bellingham

Fucking mental. For starters, I’m quite certain he’s mixed race

2ndly, I think it’s important enough to mention that he’s mixed race again as it makes Wright’s comments fucking bonkers

Oh

Am I missing something then.
What's that got to do with a racist comment?

Guinness has been taken so forgive me blue

Don't pay any attention to me. I just slip in that reference wherever I can. (Just being playful on what has become a heated thread — to be serious, you can find what he said on today's BBC Sport website).

Absolutely bang on mate. For me, Ali & Pele were superstars even before the name came into fashion. Colour had feck all to do with it. They were quite simply the elite of the elite in their day. I very much doubt that Bellingham will get anywhere near their level.
There was no one more arrogant and loud than Ali and everyone loved him.

I do think there’s a general disparity in the way the English press report on certain black players. It was clearly evident with Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford. Not sure Jude Bellingham is the hill Ian Wright should die on though. Maybe I just pay less attention to newspapers these days, but from what I’ve seen the level of vitriol is nowhere near what Sterling, in particular, received.

Sterling's case is a complicated one. I think there are two things.

a) there was the grief he got from England supporters (some), because of the way he played for England. To be fair, he rarely delivered at anything like the same level he delivered at club level. But then, few did. (And I'll say straight out that I don't want to get into the Southgate debate with anyone on here on that one).
b) there was the largely separate phenomenon which, I think, was directly linked to the fact that a footballer coming into the prime of his career dared — yes, dared — to walk away from the very cathedral of football to join another club. Another club, furthermore, in the same parish. It wouldn't have mattered one jot if he was black, white, or orange. The baying dogs at the other end of the East Lancs Rd would have slavered, drooled and bared their fangs at him for ever and a day. What was puzzling, and disturbing, was to see it happening at many other grounds in the country. How other fans could have bought into that hatred — well, to this day, it's a mystery to me.

I don't even know what's been said about Bellingham that you could consider to be vitriolic? Maybe I've not been looking hard enough. It just seems like his petulant tendencies and shitty reactions to being dragged off when not playing well have been noticed more recently and understandably haven't been that well received. Pretty sure that would go for anyone, black or white. It's got fk all to do with racism. If you're a bit of a dick, people won't like it.

I don’t get it.

So us white folk are fine with black players like Kante because he’s not arrogant and is a model professional?

BUT us white folk aren’t fine with black players who are arrogant and a bit cuntish at times?

This is kind of where I'm at too, but I also don't blame Wright for being sensitive to it happening again. Saka and Sancho also got a lot of racist abuse after Euro 2020 even though neither was public enemy #1 like Sterling after 2016.

I also think quite a few posters on here are kidding themselves Bellingham isn't a superstar. Real bought him for 133m. He's one of about 10 players in the world with their own boot line. He's the face of the FIFA/EA 25 game, Lucozade, had his own adverts going into the last world cup etc. On the pitch he's won pretty much everything, and individually La Liga player of the year, Real player of the year, England player of the year, CL team of the season etc. Plus he's already got an absurd highlight reel of game winning moments on the big stage.

His ego does rub me the wrong way, but I can admit he's earned it.
