Keir Starmer

Very clear he wasn’t sacked for joining the picket, glad Starmer has cleared that up.

I think once the Tory leadership farce is sorted he’s going to be a lot more vocal

Vocal about what? That he doesn't think it's wrong to offer miserly pay rises?

Inflation is at 11%.

Even Mick Lynch isn’t asking for an 11% pay rise, because he knows that some of the inflation is due to short term economic shock of Covid, that’s why the rest of the G7 have high inflation also.

For Tarry to start pushing for 11% pay rises is making up policy on the spot.

Labour aren’t asking for that, the union isn’t even asking for that. The only person asking for that is Tarry.

Sacking him may be harsh, but he was definitely talking out of school

I fully support him being on the picket, btw

To be fair to Tarry, he mentioned ‘Inflation’ and then when Burley questioned him he then changed his speak to ‘I didn’t say that’ and then tried to clarify. Unsure of the other channels he appeared, had work to do.

I understand why Starmer did it but, if it was me, I’d have played things differently, especially where the Unions are concerned.

He did a full round of interviews, it is highly unlikely that he didn't get a call or text asking him what he was playing at and telling him to stop it between those appearances

And it would seem he must have chose to ignore it and carry on regardless.

He wanted to get sacked.

It's a bit of a stretch to interpret that as him pushing for 11% pay rises but I suppose when you are looking for an excuse to sack someone, or in your case excuse it, none of that matters.

In any case if this was really about talking out of class and the need to be on message who is going to carry the can for Monday's shitshow? Early doors Reeves explicitly ruled nationalisation/ public ownership across the board. Starmer when asked how that squared with his pledges waffled on about the need to be 'pragmatic' while the proper shadow transport minister said on Twitter that Labour remains committed to public ownership of the railways.

I understand where you’re coming from mate.

When I read “wage increases inline with inflation” I took him to mean exactly that.

Seems like he was asked not to speak to the press and did so anyway, so it’s talking out of school for me.

Again, I’m not saying he deserved to be sacked.

But I am saying he wasn’t sacked just because he joined the picket.

As I’ve said before I think Starmer is keeping his head down in order to let the Tories hang themselves.

But it’s become clear he needs to be a lot more up front and focused with his vision now

I don't think he has a vision beyond keeping his head down and the division in his party quiet until the next GE when he hopes to gain power by default - basically being the only option to more Tory rule and hoping they implode. It's pragmatic, maybe even sensible, but also cynical and vacuous.

Can’t disagree with any of that mate.

If Truss goes ahead with her corporation tax cut and as predicted we get 15% inflation, 7% interest rates, £4k energy bills, and she tries to make striking illegal…

I honestly don’t think she knows what she’s letting herself in for

If Starmer comes out bullish now, she’s got an enemy to fight against which might win her some support in the shires

If there’s a General Strike, riots, refusal to pay energy bill, mass protests, her enemy will be the people, and there’s only one winner there

Genuinely think this winter is going to get tasty if she gets in

At the speed things are falling apart, any announcement is likely to be irrelevant within days or weeks.

I see Martin Lewis of MoneySupermarket is suggesting the energy cap rise will be 77%, or £1500. That's going to put a lot of people in a lot of trouble very quickly.
