Liverpool Post Match Thread

My assessment of yesterday's game is as follows:

Poor team selection, Fernandinho and Otamendi should have played now matter how 'tired' from a luxurious flight they might be.

Pellers was tactically bummed.

i got a lot of stick in the summer for suggesting the unthinkable - that we had targeted the wrong areas. I said all along that we were in desperate need of another CM. Without Yaya (who has done nothing this season) and Fernandinho who to his credit has been great we have nothing in midfield.

Fernando and Delph are about championship level. Yesterday should be seen as a collective; wrong transfer strategy in the summer, poor management from Pellers and players off form.

And I now hope some of the know it alls on here start to realise that.

With yesterday's line ups, I'd say I'd have Clyne and Moreno over our full backs. Coutinho over Sterling. Skrtel and Lovren over the chuckle brothers. Maybe even Lucas and Can ahead of Yaya and Fernando. The truth is our squad apart from 3/4 worldies is woefully average and without our 3/4 best players yesterday it showed really bad. Aguero is our best player but I'm still including him in that 3/4 because he wasn't really fully fit.

Your over reaction is quite spectacular

Delph is a lot more than a championship player, as is Fernando judging from his impressive start to the season (yesterday aside)
You're right that we need some more quality in there though as yaya is going downhill fast.

Bad result, but win mid-week will see us top our group and then be able to target top of the league for Christmas/new year. Quite clearly we're concentrating finishing top of our CL group........with good reason!

I'm still fumming about yesterday. A poor team selection I can just about live with. But to not do anything about it for 40 mins is criminal ineptitude.

As well as the two cbs, Sagna was bloody awful yesterday also. 0 tackles, 0 blocks, 0 clearances, 0 interceptions. 68% pass completion...Coutinho put the pressure on and he absolutely crumbled.

Both our fullbacks were really poor yesterday. Left us exposed and I think one of the main problems is that due to the high pressing Kolarov is being asked to do the left sided centre back is dragged all over the place. Ottamendi is more experienced but even he (Spurs game) is asked to tackle for our absent LB and looks lost at times. Mangala looked shot to pieces yesterday didn't know where to go, lost confidence on the ball and in my opinion should have been taken off at half time. Sometimes the margins are so narrow and the tone was set yesterday from the off - If it is because the players weren't prepared properly that is a deeper worry. When you have Joe Hart hesitating on distribution to the point that he prefers not to roll it out but hit it at pace to a fullback you know the plan is flawed. Fortunately we are still in everything and it can be corrected. We lacked Silva and to a lesser extent Nasri who are always willing to get the ball in tight situations. Yaya for all his brilliance over the last 5 years drops deep, gets the ball and gives it straight backwards to a defender rather than turn, and get us going forward. I'm sick of seeing him throw his hands up as he wants people to find space BUT he is the one who delays things so Liverpool could easily mark us out of the game. Klopp set that horrible Lucas man on man on Debruyne and twice he came in from behind which should have been bookings. None the less it was a tactical masterstroke the type that I believe Pellers can't seem to organise.

Where do you start with comments like this ? i could start ripping this post to shreds , but its not worth the bother , this "fan" will be the first in the queue to have his photo taken with the premiership trophy adorned with sky blue ribbons at the end of the season, YCNMIU.

Poor everything yesterday. I've come to the conclusion that half our players don't care

If Fernandhino was not fit to start we could and should have started 3 man midfield of Delph, Yaya and Fernando.

The back 4 was a shambles but they had no cover.

Hope the players look at this the same as when we lost to the Rags last year and go on a decent run.

Lessons need to be learnt by all yesterday

yesterday apart the reason is obvious: Injury to our very best players.

Whether we recover and win the league is down entirely to overcoming the injury problems. At least we got one back yesterday although it will be a month before he is back to normal.

Just in time for his next injury :(

This all day long , every blue in the ground could see after 20 minutes we were getting mullered , and MP did f*ck all , how it wasnt 6-0 at half time was down to Joe Hart and the fact the dippers are an average team , Barca , Bayern or Real would have scored ten and declared after 45 minutes, even the rags would have been a 1-0 up :)

I agree with that, however we could do that, AND win yesterday, if it was managed better, and the trouble is that next Saturday is now a bigger game than it needed to be, and Southampton are a decent side, who will play a lot like Liverpool did.

We clearly have too many average players in our squad, and if they're not at that "average" level, that can be the end result. Its frustrating because we all knew we had that performance in us, we've seen the same capitulation once before this season, in that last friendly in Stuttgart, hopefully we respond the same way we did after that.

We desperately need our best players back, and if they're not, then we shouldn't be resting our other best players, that was madness, even though that team selection yesterday 'on form' should still be able to compete with Liverpool, and yet they failed miserably to do so.

Couple of games in a row where Pellegrini has made some poor choices with line ups & substitutes in my opinion.

But not all the blame can be on him, the defending was shambolic from Mangala & Demichelis, was worried when I saw the line up but didn't imagine they'd perform that badly together.

Was clearly our worst performance of the season by some distance & the first time I've doubted our capability to win the title, in points lost in other games there's been large chunks of bad luck playing part, today was just a shambles all over. Hopefully we turn it around sooner rather than later because it's going to be costly.

A win against Juve would do wonders to pick the confidence back up, so I'm hoping for a performance to be put in there.

Confidence went out of the window once I saw Otamendi and Fernandinho were dropped to the bench, two recent best performers. I don't like how Demichelis has started two league games and both have been 4-1 thrashings where our defence is at sea, he should be gone in the summer.

Sorry but dippers are far from average, I'd put money on them making a challenge for the title. The palace result was just a blip. Klopp deserves credit for getting max performance from his players.

Have to admit that I'd been worried about that fixture ever since Klopp became Liverpool manager. Our team often struggles to cope with a side that presses and Klopp is the master at it.

That said, I wasn't expecting a capitulation as bad as that and while I will always give the opposition credit - Liverpool were excellent yesterday - I do think we were the architects of our own downfall to a considerable extent. I've often defended Pellegrini on here but I'm not sure what that line up was all about yesterday. It smacked of either naivety or arrogance because I can't fathom why he didn't pick a formation that would've coped better with a side that was clearly going to come and press us.

send him out in january and bring back denayer

Dark horses for a title tilt for me and that's all down to Klopp IMO. I say dark horses because the overall quality of their playing squad isn't as good as ours, Arsenal's, or United's, so I'd expect that to work against them over the course of a full season.

that result was less about Liverpool and more about Mangala and Demichelis not being good enough

get rid

Ota and Dinho should have started

Sterling - meh
