Fair point, it's not very clear. The first line you quote - "I don't have to put up with..." is the key. What I mean by that is that I'm not stuck with knobheads and can't avoid them in some way. All the fans of other clubs I know and have to mix with for any length of time are reasonable people and if they weren't I wouldn't have to talk football/they wouldn't be in a position to keep banging on about things. So the answer is both!
I get you, just, the thing is most of us will in some capacity know Liverpool and United and other fans,I used to work with a lad whose brother died at Hillsborough, and majority is banter, however let's look at (especially) last few seasons the things that have happened, from bricking buses to printing t shirts, they all like to be cast as one,so that's how they'll get treated at the end of the day.
Let me give you a prime example from my (last few months) experience, the butchers I use has Liverpool fans in it,and they know I'm City, believe me they know, one of them you can have a good general football chat and banter with, now the other would often glance over but say nothing, until recently,(title run in) he had plenty to say,so much so it almost escalated into a row in the bloody shop,I've heard you a few times he said,so he spewed a load of shite which I just laughed at.
Let's see I said, constantly praying every night that we would win the league, and on the day of the CL final he said to me it should have been City we playing tonight, another little dig,but I told him I was happy with the 4 we had took this season.
So the moral is that maybe they are not all knobheads, but the ones who are make it easier to treat them all as the same, and the laughable thing is,most of these have never seen their team win the league, must fucking kill them inside.
