Seven years in the making! A first glimpse at the new square at Portugal Street East in Manchester now that the hoardings have been removed.
Working alongside six different landowners, re-form has developed public realm proposals including two new spaces and four streets which knit together the emerging Piccadilly East district. The first phase includes the Leonardo Hotel, which opened early 2022, and the second phase will feature two residential schemes – Victoria House and The Castings – and the new public square, all due to be completed later this year.
The square will be ready late spring and will sit at the heart of the emerging neighbourhood, offering 24 new trees, amenity lawns and rain gardens all surrounded by seating clusters, catenary lighting, and generous paved spaces that will support ground floor spill out and activation from the surrounding developments.
We’ll be back on site in a few weeks to capture more photos once the grass is laid and the new trees are in leaf.

I know what it’s about however I do think not everyone is all for everything being concreted over. Just my opinion.True.
That wound cost annual maintenance. Property developers would rather include low maintenance outside areas within their developments.
Circle Square and Symphony Park are a great example of grass and greenery. It's a fantastic development.

Standard design for them. It's cheap, and easy with little work for them to do. And imho getting rather boring.
In that the design is the same. No risk.Cheap in what way?
It would be great to see the council buy up some land a make a huge European style square/plaza in central Manchester and make sure it's well policed to keep out the piss heads and druggies.TBF a lot of property developers in Mn Hester, especially Renaker and Salboy are creating interesting and exciting open spaces with plenty of trees, planting, and nice landscaping.
I work there two days a week. It's a nice development but for some reason, doesn't feel quite as spectacular as the photos make it look.True.
