A Manchester ‘Old Town’… but new! Yeah that would be good.Unrealistic, I know. But wouldn't it be nice to see some small developer/builder do a Shambles-type building somewhere in the City? 99% of these proposed developments, while impressive in their scale, are not particularly easy on the eye. I fully understand, by the way, that economics dictate the type of structure that is built.
The buildings with more character are the older buildings. The Midland Hotel, The Town Hall, Central library, the Cathedral, Chetham's, the aforementioned Shambles, the Refuge tower (fuck Kimpton) etc etc. Most of those new/proposed skyscrapers look, to this FOC's eyes, fairly soulless.A Manchester ‘Old Town’… but new! Yeah that would be good.
The skyline is one thing and looks good from a distance and when you’re standing in certain spots and looking up… but, from a footfall point-of-view when you’re actually walking around Town, some more architecturally interesting lower story buildings would be nice to have.
I always think a city is only as nice as its roads, pavements, street signs, street fences, traffic posts, benches, bus stops, bins etc. and the feel/look of its ground floor buildings.
I suppose it’s a case of never knowing who is ever going to invest in any of that sort of stuff.
Obviously London . usually around 200 tower cranes on the skyline at any one time . Birmingham isn`t that far behind Manchester in regards new builds and height . Leeds is also bulking up it`s skyline but is light years behind both Manchester and Birmingham .Is there any other city with the same level of development???! It seems off the scale!!
