I think there's a militant anti-motorist involved in transport on Salford council and another (possibly Kate something) on Manchester Council.

As for public transport; my commute from Prestwich to Wythenshawe has extended from a reliable 40-45 minutes to 40-50 minutes - not a big increase but noticeable. The range of times by public transport are 82-87 minutes with at least 15 minutes walking in which to enjoy the rain. However, the GMPTE route planner which suggests 82-87 minutes to arrive by 0800 also suggests it's 28 minutes by car. This implies the GMPTE times do not take into account sections where the busses are slowed by the rush hour.
 
November is always horrendous for traffic. Everybody is in work, building up to Christmas, there are thousands of shit drivers who travel 10mph slower because they can't adapt to the dark and the change in weather and loads of vehicles break down because they're not winter ready
 
It seems to me the best solution is for everyone to ride their bike or jog everywhere. Take the pressure off the roads and help everyone shed those extra pounds so they’ll fit into the Puma kit next season.

The roads are littered with fuckers who literally cannot drive. And every motorway jam you're in is because of some idiot who shouldn't be on the road. And every fifth car these days is a fog light wanker. Boils my piss it does.
 
Think how much of your life is spent sat in traffic, fuck that I moved over the road from work best thing I ever did. I gave up a job in Swinton due to the m60 making me depressed.

I've started going full beam on these fuckers and blinding them back. Hope they crash the horrible twats.
 
Having moved to Anglesey a couple of years back, mainly because I was sick to death of the traffic, reading this thread is making me feel very, very smug.
 
Manchester is still mainly set out as it was built before cars were in abundance as a densely populated place, most roads both major or minor cannont handdle the amount of cars in motion or parked.

All major rds into and out of Manchester city centre are packed, as are buses and trams in rush hr
One way systems and pedestrianisation of a mile raditius of the city centre is an option

Farming out business and industry to the other towns in GM rather than it all being centred in town would help.

Basically the city is too small and compact for it's growth.

Get yourself a 1970s A-Z and you'll see just how many roads have already been pedestrianised and made one-way. Cannon Street, Market Street, Albert Square past the front of the town hall heading south, busses only on Oxford Road and bits of Portland Street. Pedestrianisation and one-way systems aren't the answer they are part of the problem.
It might improve for a few months if they ever finish the M60 work, but will then be back to chaos when they turn the eastern side into a "not very smart" motorway.
And we need a proper ring road, not the wibbly, wobbly worm with more choke points than the Boston Strangler that we currently enjoy.
Every time a road is closed or has reduced width due to construction work we have even more problems as the alternatives have already been closed.

One thing that struck me tonight was how many people stuck in the traffic only had one person on the car. Surely car sharing clubs are a significant way forward?

Tell me where did I say it was compulsory? Maybe advertising car shares as a suggestion and encourage people to do so and reduce traffic. Not sure what is has to do with political views whatsoever.
 
Sustrans report about cycling/walking in Manchester which came out a couple of weeks ago states that a third of people travelling by car in the morning rush hour travel less than 1km. That's a shocking stat. No, some people don't have a choice, but that's an easy walking or cycling distance for the majority, healthier and probably quicker too.

I don't mean pedestrianise as it is now all hapdash, I mean properly ban cars from the centre.
metro buses, taxis and delivery vans should be the only thing in town.
Of course that would mean building a proper transport hub to service the buses, coaches etc and proper free secure parking facilities in the entrances to the city with people having access to travel within the centre on trams and metro shuttle free.

It takes 15 mins tops to walk from dilly station to castlefield, yet I work with people who drive across between these places and moan about being stuck for 30 mins in traffic

I am suggesting it as a major change in both out city center and the mindset of comuters, not as something to be done half arsed as in the past.

on the one way system I mean that more for local areas where old terreced streets cannot cope with both directions of traffic when every house now has a car practically parked outside it narrowing the streets not desig ed for them a century ago.

Agree with most of what’s been said. Just left work and jumped on the M60 and I’m sat here now, doing about 20mph max. We just don’t have the infrastructure.

Ah, altruism. Yes, I remember now, that is in ample supply on the roads and byways of Manchester. Excellent idea. Maybe we could shutdown all the traffic lights during rush hour so that friendly Mancs can all help each other get to work, and home, quicker. Outstanding idea!

I explained the “political” aspect of it at the end.

Carry on with the grand delusion. Sadly, I’m having to live with it here!
