We need to be consistently winning league championships and FA cups and learn how to dominate the domestic scene first, then success in Europe will come.
Whether or not Bobby is the man for the job, I'm not sure, but I would think that our owners will err on the side of stability this summer. After all, there is no point sacking Mancini unless we have someone better to take over waiting in the wings, and who is available right now? Would Klopp, De Boer, Pellegrini actually be a step up from Mancini? Ancelotti, Mourinho and Guardiola out of the question.

Agree with this. Baconface took over the rags in 1986. Didn't win Europe's elite competiton until 1999. 13 years, but in that time he'd built United into the major domestic force in English football.
Mancini has done an incredible in the 3 years he's been with us. 5 year contract in the bag last summer. There's really no point in this discussion, other than to feed half a dozen poster's delusions that they know better.

Exactly right. There have been a number of teams who went the other way round (clubs people have pointed at in saying "they qualified from the group stage on their first go in the CL") yet then didn't even qualify for the competition the following season. People think because we won the league last season and we've spent a load of money over the last four years we're automatically right on a par with the likes of Barça and München. But we're not, not yet. I'd say we're just about getting to and past the level Wolfsburg and Deportivo reached when they were successful in their respective leagues in recent times. We've got a great core to our squad, that, when everyone's fit, is a very talented team. However - and this has been shown in the last two seasons - when we have to rely on our squad we are lacking quite a lot, compared. Our squad hasn't evolved as a top quality squad yet. There's some quality but we could take a number of Arsenal Chelsea and Spurs' squad players and improve our squad greatly, and none of our squad players would get into any other top squads in Europe.notreallyhere said:A lot of people equating building with success in Europe, but surely we have to build from the bottom up not the other way around. But the European Cup was the elite European competition of the day.
And the Cup Winners Cup was won in his 5th season in charge.
