Sweeper keepers? Name one in the Premiership. Manuel Neuer is a one off.
Well that's the point isn't it. There's never been one because there's never been Pep. Anyone who doesn't think this is an important cog in the machine hasn't paid attention to Guardiola over the last 8 years or so.

As far as I understood from Pep's latest (and first) pressconference he cleary stated he will decide on tactics based on the players and their quality at his disposal. And his need to discover what the PL is about. There is not a clear definition of a Pep-player or Pep-goalkeeper. Neuer is great with his feet playing a sweeper, but with our players Pep might wanna form his defence in another way than at Bayern.

As for a goalkeeper, I prefer to have a good number two who is willing to accept his position as number 2, stays eager to keep the number 1 on his toes and can actually take over the number 1 position if he is given time to show himself. Pantilimon got his chance, did ok but not enough to convince the manager to actually take over from Hart. Caballero never got that number of back to back games to show himself. He got two at the most. I therefore can understand if City looks at a new number 2.
If you get either Ter Stegen or Bravo it will be the end of Hart in a City jersey for sure. I wonder if the management is collectively convinced that is what needs to be done. So far Pep accepted the goalkeeping coach to keep his position at City and I like to believe Hart had an important say in that. You can take whatever you like from that decision.

I think it's very clear what type of goalkeeper Pep likes. He'll go along with what is at his disposal because that's what he has to do until the players he fancies are bought.
I'd say us being linked heavily with keepers on an almost daily basis - all who are renown for their ability with the ball at their feet tells a story.

Valdes was Guardiola's keeper at Barcelona. I don't recall him "sweeping" or any comments about him other than that he was an exceptional keeper. Did Guardiola change Neuer when he arrived at bayern? I don't know. My thought is that he has always been eccentric and very confident

If the players in front of the goalkeeper are technically incapable of retaining possession under the slightest pressure- and most of our back line have been found suspect- then answering the goalkeeping question is arguably not the most immediate matter.

I'm not really talking about a 'sweeper' as such. I think people just use that word to make a point. His goalkeepers need to be comfortable with the ball in possession and be willing to take chances. They need to be able to control it quickly and release it at all angles. Joe will struggle because he's not up to scratch (yet)
I see the argument used a lot that the defenders are to blame for not giving him the options by not creating space and I've never gone for that. The space is there but soon closed down because Joe hasn't been quick enough to spot or confident enough to play it.

The most important thing is can the keeper protect his goal. All the better if he is good with his feet, but I don't see Guardiola scouring the market for a sweeper keeper. I didn't see anyone in the Euros doing that apart from Neuer. He's a one off

Lloris is pretty close. He's always running out of his box to make clearances and mop up balls played over the top.

Lloris can 100% be classed as a 'sweeper keeper'. De Gea not far off either.

Lloris?

Probably depends on how one defines "sweeper keeper," but he would seem to be the best recent domestic example.

Seems like Pep would be looking at "quickness of distribution" more so than "sweeper/not sweeper." Neuer's style would seem certainly to fit well with all that, of course.

Pep uses his keepers for 2 things.

1 is as an extra man. If you're playing out from the back you need an extra man who can be part of it, and you can use the extra man to create an imbalance or create room for your dangerous players.

and the other is so you can push the defenders up. If you push the defence that high, you condense the pitch and stop counterattacks.

To do both we need a keeper who can run out and deal with balls which will go over the top of the defence, and also who can comfortably pass the ball around under some pressure.

Whether it's Joe or someone else, that's what we need.

Thats a shame.

On one hand it's a nice move by Txiki - forcing Barcelona to choose between the two, and then picking up the one they don't go for.

But I'd hoped for the 23 year old not the 33 year old.
My guess is they see Rulli at 24 as being the long term successor but going out on loan similar to Courtois. Bravo at 33 to challenge Hart and maybe displace him?

If it makes you feel any better, Bravo is a far more polished shot stopper than ter Stegen, alongside his excellent distribution.

Yes, he's shorter term, but it's hard to discount Rulli at this point either.
