Marc Cucurella

I doubt this saga is over just yet. It all depends on the attitude of Cucurella going forward.

If he accepts the situation then it will be off. If not then Brighton would be very naive to not negotiate.

I don’t think we will move much if at all on whatever our valuation is and I don’t think we should do.

Sometimes as one door closes another opens and it works out for the better

Who knows JWE may turn out to be perfect without having to deal with any great expectations

It's not the £5m we might save now, its the £5m clubs will tack on to every transfer knowing we'll fold every time.
Not necessarily.

Each transaction is its own animal. We may have played ourselves into this one by letting Zinchenko go first even though personally I consider the two decisions to be mutually independent of one another from City's perspective. I have to admit it created the opportunity to be leveraged a bit by Brighton.

It depends what you determine as value. If we didn't have a lack of full backs and going into a world cup season, I'd have agreed with you. For that reason he does represent value. We are in desperate need of a full back, unless JWE/Lewis turn into superstars this season.
value does not work like that. there are 10s of factors that go into making a valuation. squad need is just a small part. besides we are not desperate for cucurella, he has many substitute targets. he has low long term staying ability compared to the english guys. has no marketing ability. no new market segment reached. new sponsorship opportunity is low. relative squad strength is high. etc, etc. in short cucurella is a not a unique market opportunity nor are we desperate so we do not value him at 50 mil.

….or you have. Tell him (via his agent) to hand in a request………you now have a greater obligation to see it through ‍♂️
In what way do we have any obligation? If we step out we save 50m and Brighton are left with a player who doesn't want to be there, resents the club from stopping his transfer, and probably plays at 100 percent instead of 110 percent.

City don't get the LB but we've done that before and still win.

It's just a bad path for it to go down for Brighton and for the player.

I think you'll be surprised. He created nearly as many chances as Trent and Robertson last season and he is playing for Brighton. That means he created as many as Cancelo also. If he had a Haaland upfront how many of those turn into assists?

Was it at left back or left wing back?

Brighton perspective here, no hate intended at all:

Man City have their valuation, Brighton have their valuation, they are allowed to be different. Cucurella is absolutely worth at least £50m to Brighton based on his season, contract and age. Is he worth that to Man City? Not my place to say, but in my opinion he is one of few known quantities around Europe that would fit into Man City's fullback role like a glove. His LCB ability fits in perfectly with being able to play with Cancelo at RB who gets his free roaming into midfield, Cucurella tucking in more often than not to ensure defensive soundness.

Whether Man City/Pep/Txiki will see that as being worth £50m+ is up to them, but from my POV if I were a City fan I would be absolutely gagging to have Cucurella come in as I think he is a step up from Zinchenko. If he is able to replicate Brighton form for Man City, that for 5+ years is easily worth the money in my opinion.

At the end of the day, Cucurella is fighting for a Spain spot and moving to the best team in the country (and possibly the world) is a very good way to stake your claim for a starting spot at the World Cup. No Brighton fan is demanding he stays, just that he leaves for a fair price.

Let's not kid ourselves that this negotiation has any bearing on the future by the way. If City pay up, it doesn't mean in the future they are weaker, they simply met an asking price that isn't extortionate (Maguire, Pepe) and Brighton aren't a less attractive prospect for players just because they are valuing Cucurella at more than £40m.

Brighton are simply a selling club, if they don't sell him now, they will sell him next summer, no notable player is going to their club to compete unless it's for development and experience sake. We should look at alternatives

So they get to keep him another season and get the fee they want if he performs well, I don't blame them one bit for keeping hold of their best players.

Cancelo, Walker and Zinchenko. That setup barely got City past last season.

Cancelo, Walker alone, that’s just asking for problems. Hopefully City do a “Dias” and move for an option swiftly.

Ps. I don’t count Esbrand as he’s barely played 5 senior games. He’s fourth choice at best.
