It's short for proper Ronaldo. Lopes talks about it on "ONE TO WATCH: Marcos Lopes" on youtube at 4:37. He also mentions that he moved to Portugal from Brazil at the age of four so he may feel more Portuguese. Plus he's represented the youth levels of Portugal.
