Metrolink to / from Etihad

Have Metrolink got a new director of operations?

Yesterday we had trams direct to the Etihad from Altrincham and miracle of miracles a tram back to Altrincham from the Etihad after the match.

Both double units so for the first time ever it was a pleasurable journey in both directions.

I got from Edge Lane to The Etihad at 2pm yesterday afternoon no problem at all.
However, when it was announced on the big screen that there was going to be a reduced Metro service after the game I decided to walk back to my car instead of standing in the hot sun on the Ashton bound platform.
And sure enough, during the 35 minutes it took me to walk down Ashton New Road to Edge Lane , not one tram passed me by, so it definitely reduced the frequency of the Metro service.
Conversely, there were 4 trams heading towards town and 3 of those were doubles.
So yesterday was fine for Metro users heading into town, but not for those of us heading towards Ashton.
(After the game of course).

That stupid announcement from City yesterday made about 15,000 people get up and leave.

The funny thing is he said “Metrolink will have a reduced service, trams going back to the city centre will be every 12 minutes”…

well I’ve waited over 15 minutes on the platform numerous times in the past with no sign of a Met, so what was the fucking difference? and what was the need to announce it in the ground?

Something good on the Comedy Channel at 5-30.

It nearly caught me out, got on at Sale and jumped off at Cornbrook ready to change trams. Looked at the board and realised I was on a direct tram, so luckily jumped back on

They just repeated what it said on the Metrolink web site, which was in fact a complete load of bollocks. The trams from Altrincham were running on 6 minute intervals and the return journey wait was no different than usual.

Most of the trams from the ground seem to normally head to Eccles and the Eccles line is shut until October. So I imagine it’s more to do with that than a change of policy. Find out in October I guess.

re Metrolink tickets. Can I use my bank card to ‘tap in’ at the Etihad tram stop after a game or do I have to have a pre purchased ticket?

When I'm over, I try to avoid the tram after the game. That stop at the stadium is pandemonium, so I'll walk back into town. Going to the game yesterday, I got the tram in Picc Gardens at 12:30, and it was chocka, even at that relatively early stage of the day.

I expect you are right, but surely Metrolink should rethink their match day scheduling?

Yes, you "tap in" at the windows of the kiosks in the chicane. Can use credit / debit cards or Google / Apple Pay on your phone as per the yellow terminals on all tram stops.

Had no issues before or after the game yesterday & got seats in both directions. There was a heat related speed restriction between Deansgate & Cornbrook on the way back, but was still back in Chorlton before 6pm.

I know what you mean but it’s a job I don’t envy. It’s one thing knowing that you’re going to have thousands of fans all wanting go from A to B at the exact same time. But they’ve still got to run the rest of the network as advertised and I don’t suppose they have a load of extra spare drivers and trams just available for a couple of hours on a match day. They should probably be able to do a bit better though.

That is all I ask for, them doing better than the norm.

I think you will find it has more to do with the useless bastards doing work on the Eccles line and the Bury -Alty tram was terminating at Crumpsall. That meant they had a surplus of trams. It will be back to normal very soon.
