Metrolink

Posted this before but it doesn't seem to have appeared on BM.

Just a question if anyone can help.
My son will be starting at Manchester Uni in Sept and as I've lived away from Manchester for many years I'm no longer familiar with the bus routes.

He'll be living in Victoria Park Campus and meeting me at Eastlands on matchdays. Can anyone give me some advice as to the best way for him to get to the ground ? I assume a bus to Piccadilly and then another to the stadium (or walk along the canal path). Which are the best buses to get ?

53 from Dickinson Rd goes to the ground, but does a bit of a loop around Gorton first.

Its always suprised me that they've never considered buidling a train station on the line that runs behind the athletic stadium. Its sill used for frieght I believe, and you could then have trains direct to and from Victoria taking less than five minutes..
There's also a disused viaduct running from Ashton Old Road to near Ardwick Station that could connect that line directly to Piccadilly and Oxford Road.

Up to 1965 there was a spur off this line to Picc stn the jun was 300 yards from ashton new road the viaducts can be seen on the Picc side of Ardwick stn it has been suggested that this line be reopened for main line trains to use this would allow a Picc-Vic shuttle to operate, sorry to say but in my view it will never happen, would love it if I was to be proved wrong.

Perhaps the Sheik could buy Northern Rail..

Its definitely an option worth looking at though, if the stadium is ever expanded they'll need every means to get fans away after the game..

It's one thing Wembley got right. Getting away from the stadium on rail is a doddle. Takes me 20 mins max

When you get to Ashburys the train has to reverse to go back into Manchester. Is it possible to go Vic->stadium->Ashburys->Picc? Picc->Ashburys->stadium->Vic looks more feasible.

You might have to go to Guide Bridge to get the train back onto the right line into Picc.

Or just go to and fro- Vic-> stadium
It's should be looked into mate, with nearly 50,000 every other week for football, and 60,000 for pop concerts in the summer, if this was in Germany or France that would be one of the first things looked at, how are the people going to get in and out of the stadium and it's area. but this is Britain and every thing is about the cost, yet when it comes to building big tents in London for the millennium the costs go out of the window, how stupid is it to have a metro station all lit up with no service ! under GMT you had match buses all over Manchester, and now apart from a couple of little companies that run a couple there is none , why ? because the two big companies (stagecoach & first) want to know " who's paying for them" even doe the buses will be full !

It's about choice isn't it? If the tram doesn't turn up, you can get the bus or walk. If you were going to walk but it rains, you can choose the bus or get the tram if one turns up that isn't "rammed" and if you can afford it. It can't be worse to have the tram as an option, even if you choose not to use it.

Pretty sure the trams will be absolutely brilliant for me and the rest of us who sink a few in City square before and after the games. A lot of people on here seem to think that every single person arrives just before kick off and leaves straight after when the trams and everything else will no doubt be very busy, they don't
agreed
we'll use it
leave the car in bury, tram to town, couple of beers, on to the game, couple after the game and watch the highlights, tram to town, bite to eat and then back to the frozen wastes of east Lancs

Want me to "mind" your car mate? ;)

Don't get too excited about Metrolink. One recalcitrant pigeon sitting on the tracks in Piccadilly and it all grinds to a halt.

Recalcitrant pigeon!

I love you PB x
Aye, but he's a big bugger and always sticking up for the BBC and Sky

And I love you too, squirty x

Does no one on here work or know someone who works for Metrolink?

I understand one of the reasons for the hold up is something to do with the new trams and the signalling system. Can anyone confirm this?
