Whether Isreal or Hamas (or some other Palestinian militants) are responsible is presently unclear (although some posters have discernibly already drawn conclusions based on their own perspectives and prejudices) but either way this is exactly why Israel should have been far more cautious when responding to the attacks of ten days or so ago.
It’s inconceivable to me that Hamas launched those brutal and shocking attacks without wanting Israel to respond in the way they have. Full of anger and vengeance. Not thinking straight. Israel never stepped back to ask why that was the case. Never for a second considered whether this could have been a trap.
I’m no military expert, but giving your enemy exactly what they wish for should at least give you pause for thought, especially when modern warfare has shown us that the days of Germany marching into Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France and taking them in six weeks are a relic of warfare.
The response to 9/11 was equally as ill-considered and unleashed forces that could not be contained, which is what Hamas were probably wishing for. They probably figured that provoking Israel had a fighting chance of escalating things to their advantage. Not with any certainty, but with enough prospects of success to take a calculated gamble. Israel were plainly not alive to this.
Israel has an absolute right to defend itself, but as tragic as it was, like 9/11 (and unlike the Russian invasion of Ukraine) the massacre itself did not present a clear and present existential threat to the State of Israel, and any response needed to be cold, calculated, purposeful and considered. It has been none of these things and Israel has now lost control of the situation in a way that Hamas probably dreamed of.
In stating all this, I ask myself are Hamas capable of doing this on purpose to point the finger of blame at Israel (as much as Israel are also capable of being responsible, albeit unintentionally) then the answer is unequivocally ’yes’ but that’s one of the many reasons why Israel needed to apply their force in a more measured and less reactive fashion.
They’ve given Hamas exactly what they wanted imo.
