Well if Carrick cost 18mil 4 year ago and Milners better and Carrick was undoubtably one of the reasons we were beaten in the CC semi (evidenced by him slotting the ball in the back of the net) then errr....how much is Milner worth again....

Milner is better than Carrick?? Says who? Thats a matter of opinion. Carrick has winners medals whereas Milner hasnt. Granted he didnt prior to joining the rags but £18m was seen as a high fee for him at the time - we are talking £10m more for a player is is not as established in the premier league or england set up as Carrick was when he went for £18m

Well not you our kid but the iti certainly likes to eulogise about him, not heard him waxing lyrical about Carrick for a while. Whats hardly a matter of opinion is neither Carrick or Fletcher would be deemed to be u-tube babes and so it's fair to say they are somewhat ordinary, steady, able to pass, know when to push on and going off our meets with them know how to move forward and score....both won fuck-all-your-honour before they arrived in Trafford but undoubtedly fit into the jigsaw enough to opine that they would'nt be going anywhere for the price that the younger Milners been touted at (even with their gaffers being skint).

How much did MH spend that summer, answers your own question..

So how are you going to prove, you could Guarantee we would have finished in the top four, if we had those two players playing for us this season ?

I can't, strangly enough I don't have a magic ball that will allow you to look into alternative realities.

But both would have offered something we don't have, creativity through the centre and a link between midfield and attack.

And i agree, we have been missing the link between both positions, However, i thought it was strange, that you could guarantee we would finish in the top four, if we still had both players. Now you have explained it i understand and respect where you have got your opinion from.

villa will not be bullied into selling milner in the same way we were not bullied when it came to selling SWP to chelsea we got £21mill for SWP and there was no way he was worth it but chelsea wanted him and paid what we wanted

Its not the actual fee that bothers me as it isnt my money. Its the fact we are paying that fee for an average footballer who has not lit up any games with a bit of magic or won a game singlehandly or controlled a game from start to finish. He works hard and has a decent level of consistency. He will never (imo) be considered one of the best and comparisons to Gerrard will fall flat over time (imo). If Milner costs us £28m other clubs will use that as a yardstick and say if Milner is worth £28m then Modric is worth £40m, Rodwell is worth £25m etc etc.

Again in my opinion SWP was a far better prospect than Milner when we signed him and had actually lit up games and scored goals from nothing to win us games
Makele was described as the most important player at Chelsea. He didn't light up games. As I said before you need a mixture of talent in a succesful team. And Milner has quite a lot going for him creatively as well. Compare him on the left for england in friendlies to SWP.

What I dont understand is why all the fuss over £8m? Come on Guy's and Gal's, so it's ok to spend £20m but not £28m? Whats £8m when you're spending so much anyway? Just doesnt make sense to me. Pay the £28m and get the deal done! As for strengthening Villa.... Who in their right mind is going to go to them that would make them a threat to us?

£28m for James f*cking Milner! When are we going to stop paying over the odds for average players, He has had ONE good season in his whole career, We could buy 3 players thats just as good as him for that sort of money! Yet Ireland has "one good season" and everyone is in uproar that he m...

When we tried to sign Kaka, for once, one member of the gutter press got something right. 'Kaka is a cherry for the top of a cake that hasn't been baked yet.'

Barry, De Jong, Kompany, Boateng.... Milner? These are the players who will be solid who can be the engine room for whichever flair players we eventually attract.

Great post.

I really do not rate Milner he is okay but a clogger. Aston Villa are a very over rated team who never seem to get injuries. If he comes here or goes to Chelsea I can see him being a massive flop.
