Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

There was only one team in it for 70 minutes but Newcastle showed slightly more towards the end as we kept losing possession. That may well have been due to tiredness following the game on Wednesday, but we made the wrong choice of pass too often.
Having said that, the defence were excellent and didn't allow Newcastle to benefit from our errors, and we also created chances (Haaland and Foden) during that period.
As for subs, I think Pep prefers tired players who are carrying out his match tactics to changing the plans to accommodate fresh legs. We don't have a lot of like for like options so he kept the shape knowing we had a full week to recover.
City were gone after 75 mins dug deep and deserved it

I'm feeling rather generous this morning as I've just seen the Spurs v Rags highlights and I award Corporal Jones, yet another partially sighted whistling wanker to come to The Etihad, a staggering 2/10 for his inept performance. I award the idiot in the VAR shed who thought the two fouls by Gordon were not worthy of red cards 0/10.

The dirtiest bunch of roughhouse merchants since Athleti were last in Manchester.

I'm informed that VAR doesn't get involved in yellow cards yet the attempted crippling of Dias by Gordon in front of the CB stand he hadn't seen. Nor did I see the lino waving that ornament he carries, and yet he eventually gave the dirty bastard a yellow. How did he arrive at that conclusion unless he gets a word in his ear? We are being

Newcastle were no where near where I'd thought they be - a sort of Arsenal with the dark arts welded to their boots.

Very stout performance from the whole team, and the two lads, Gvardiol and Kovacic, look as though they've been here for ages.

Foden took the midfield by storm and looks back to the form that saw him best in the competition when he was in the U17 England team.

Just thinking back to the game last night; how quiet was Tonali for them? Did absolutely nothing and they were better after he went off.

Agreed, he looked like he couldn't wait to get rid of the ball and played conservative passes.

I don't think we give ourselves enough credit.

When you actually had a look at Newcastles first 11 last night, how many would have actually started for us? Not a single player. We were just better all around the pitch and the quality told last night.
All things being equal yes. However, after travelling to Greece 72 hours earlier & playing in energy sapping 30⁰ heat, & then seeing our bench when the squad was announced, I feared all of this would catch up with us against Newcastle.

Eddie Howe thought so too. On 75 minutes we visibly wilted, albeit we were still mainly controlling things. Howe made a raft of substitutions & kept raising the tempo in the hope we'd splutter to a stop, but we kept going & thankfully saw the match out.

Rodri was fucked, & we had no one on the bench to realistically give him a rest. We've got a week off to rest & recouperate, so hopefully we'll use that time to bring in another two first team starters, for what looks like another gruelling season ahead.

I believe Eddie Howe went to Athleti when he was out of work to study them . I think it shows.

Yeah; I wasn't impressed with Newcastle. They had more of the ball in the second half, but did next to nothing with it. How many saves did Eddy have to make? One, that I remember, and that was pretty routine. The Geordies will do well to replicate last season's finish. Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea can't all be as bad again this time around, shirley?
