Enter Manchester City, who have placed themselves in prime position to sign the centre-forward as they are believed to be preparing a mind-blowing €138M bid, according to Spanish TV programme Punto Pelota.

Lol at that,Thats really going to happen with FFP. Wait a year and could get Bale for 50, add Falcoa for 50 and leaves 38 mill spare. Laughable claim

You say that though but Neymar is the most marketable athlete/ sportsman in the world, if he is marketed correctly you would make the transfer back and more... the image and profile of the club would become so big in South America let alone Europe and Asia.

Huge, huge gamble though.

Is he though? Really? Surely Ronaldo, Messi, Xavi, our very own Agueroooo plus quite a few others (Bale?) are more marketable, and better players. What is so good about Neymar? He's just a young, average striker who's only proven in his home league. I just don't get all the hype. If anyone spent £30m+ on him instead of Bale or Falcao they must be mad.

Guess I'll leave this here...

Brazilian star Neymar is the most marketable sportsperson in the world.

The Santos striker has been placed ahead of the likes of Lionel Messi, Usain Bolt and Lewis Hamilton at the top of SportsPro magazine's top 50 most marketable athletes.

But why is a 21-year-old who has never played club football outside of Brazil or featured in a major international tournament considered more valuable than some of the greatest athletes across the sporting world?

David Cushnan, SportsPro editor-in-chief, explains that there are three key reasons why Neymar, who also topped the list last year, earned his position.

'Essentially the crux of it is we are trying to predict marketing value over the next three years. We're trying to forecast who is going to be worth investing from a sponsorship point of view but also who perhaps offers real value for money.

'Our feeling is that Neymar has the World Cup coming up next year, where he's going to be the star at home, he's a megastar in Brazil.

'He still has this big move to come, probably to Barcelona, that will launch him to whole new level of fame. And there is no doubt that Messi is the more talented player but you can make the argument he is not particularly charismatic off the pitch, not animated or confident in front of the camera.

You can't ignore him but when it comes to marketing our conclusion was Neymar. From a marketability and brand appeal point of view, if you're picking someone for three years he's the guy.'

Can't believe I've just read someone write that Xavi and Bale are more marketable than Neymar.

Why not? What's so good about him? He's just a Brazilian Wellbeck. Over-rated and with daft hair.

Xavi and Bale are both far better players than Neymar. And I'd much rather we sign someone who will improve our team. Not convinced Neymar would, but Cavani, Falcao or Bale definitely would.

You don't have to be that good to be marketable. Look at Beckham; he was a good steady player but nowt particularly special. I could easily name 25 better players from his era...yet he has been marketable beyond belief.

Neymar is the biggest star in South America, bigger than any film stars, boxers and Formula One drivers.

Is that true? It can only because Brazil has more than half the population of the entire continent, i think Aguero is bigger in Argentina, Falcao in Colombia, Valencia in Ecuador etc.

And the Brazilian Welbeck, there's some proper shite written on here at times.

Unbelievable player and incredibly marketable but 138m euros is £118m.

Those who doubt this guy or dont really know about him habe a look at these clips from recent international friendlies. Yes they're friendlies but it's beyond doubt he has vast ability.

What I like about him is he is so attack minded - every time he gets it his default setting is attack.

I also like the way seems to always find space, but can even operate well in tight spaces and when heavily marked.

Extremely confident on the ball and has the skill to back it up.

For those moaning that he's a soft **** you'll notice he gets put on his arse several times in each clip but just gets on with it.

Fucking outrageous player. I think he's a joy to watch.

That price is to though.
