Nigel de Jong

Same argument every week and it's getting boring now.

Great at breaking play up. Worst distributing holding midfielder I have ever seen.

All the hard work undone by the fact that it takes one part of his brain ten seconds to register what the other half is telling it to do.

Pleasing on the eye because he's hard and wins tackles but we will never, ever win anything with him in the team.

Proper holding midfielders like Makalele, Mascherano and, dare I say it, Fletcher, offer significantly more because they can win it yet distribute it, effectively, before NDJ is bright enough to realise that he has actually got the ball.

There isn't one of the truly big clubs that would take NDJ if he was offered to them on a silver platter.

Wow. I completely disagree with that. Hes a great holding mid, not many better.

Can you do me a favour then? Break down and analyse the footballing ability, pros and cons, on a 1 to 10 basis, of all the relevant facets of a defensive midfielders game, of the following players:-

1) De Jong 2) Makalele 3) Mascherano 4) Fletcher

with the categories being

1) Tackling 2) Speed of thought 3) Ability to Provide an Incise Pass 4) Ability to Move Forward with ball

All of which are the fundamental basics of a defensive midfielders game.

Can we mark all four players in all four departments please?

There aren't many purely 'holding midfielders' full stop. The top teams seem to have realised a midfielder must have a more complete alround game and be also capable of carrying the ball and passing forward .

I am convinced that the phrase "holding midfielder" never existed until five years ago. I am equally convinced the term was born to describe Dietmar Hamann's role in the Liverpool team when he was alongside a rampant Steven Gerrard.

Before Hamann, nobody had ever utilised that name then, all of a sudden, midfielders who offered nothing other than breaking up play were suddenly in vogue.

Unfortunately, the game has moved on again and we need our midfielders to multi-task a bit more. Your specialist midfielder like Ireland on attack and de JOng in breaking up play is fast becoming a thing of the past and to progress we need more rounded, all round, midfielders who can perform a multitude of tasks.

Last 3 games:

Pass completion rate vs Brum: 97% successful
Pass completion rate vs rags: 90% successful
Pass completion rate vs Arsenal: 88% successful

Shockingly bad obviously.
