North Stand Construction Discussion

LCCC has been cashing in on utd fand for decades, right near the busiest tram stop.

The hotels have restaurants and often season tickets owned by them, I have been in for a meal pre and post match with a supplier 24 years ago, and other bars are open to anyone just like the one near Reading FC.

There are even places like the Red Cinema, which they don't own right on their doorstep all cashing in.

My initial post was tongue in cheek and a piss take about Lou Macari’s chippy and the Bishops Blaize being the only places to eat and drink close to OT. As you say, there are plenty of takeaways, chip shops, pubs, and hotels within walking distance of OT, as well as a KFC, M&S, Tescos, etc.

Can’t remember the season. I had a few pints at LCCC before the derby. We had no mither, but we kept quiet.

Alex.

Any updates on the meeting with the club on Monday and the questions about the North stand we asked you to put forward to the club? Thanks.

From looking at the plans and the placement of those eyelets, they’re nothing to do with the cable-net. They are most likely the connection point for the new roof beams. If you look at the curve of the new roof, it perfectly matches up with the eyelet locations.

Think you could well be right.
When it appeared on its own, it looked coincidentally close to the cables. In context of all 3, yea I can say that.

I did say 'one to watch' ;)

It’s not exactly what it says, but okay…. I was clarifying for those that thought the cable-net would be secured to the eyelets that they are there for the roof beams.

I imagine the cables will stay at pretty much the same angle as they are now.

Think so. Think you are spot on about the roof beams, the curve would back that.

A part of me still thinks that middle top beam and back one it connects to will play some part in the transfer. Not the eyelet itself, if that's purely for the roof beam, but the fact it has such a beefed up connection compared to the other two. But then, the other two have a column straight down to ground, the middle one has two either side of the junction (to straddle the existing pier) so maybe the strong connection is to counter that. Let’s keep watching.

If you look two floors below that, you can also see the connection for the third diagonal for the terrace supports, that will come once the pier is out the way. Incidentally, do you think they will weld the quadpod piers onto the connections now in place? Not seeing much in terms of boltholes etc.

The back two supports for the quadpods will be a while away, as they are part of the bay back, that hasn't even started yet, and can't till the back cables are removed.

Actually it's quite refreshing for a guy who runs a football club to admit that fans leaving early because traffic and public transport is rubbish.
It would be good if City admitted the truth that transport to and from the Ethihad is a pile of pooh. It can only improve if you admit there's a problem.
Hence the north stand development. City Square was great and did keep fans back after games. It was a victim of its own success though and the weather on occasion. More fans will stay back if there’s things to do.

There is a £2b redevelopment of the area planned. I’ve heard Mayfield Depot where the Warehouse Project is will be going and range of developments on the cards.

This article gives a little bit of info on some of the plans

Hope the club get involved with this, could be a game changer for the partially open rail link already existing to Ashburys and beyond past the stadium and into North Manchester.

No mention of a new rail link to the stadium. We will be stuck with the current transport options, which are not fit for purpose.

Yep, yet the lines are already there and go all over the place, what a bonus! Probably because of the old Newton Heath depot links. Just seems like a chance to set the transport up for decades especially with a higher capacity stadium

They are painting signs on the walking route back to Piccadilly - what more do you want !!!

Any info mate ?
1500 homes, huge office space, the usual retail mix. £2bn investment.

Will make Etihad and Co Op arena feel closer to the City.

Developers were defo very excited about the Co Op opening - feeling it was a game changer for the city and great for their development sitting between Picadilly and the stadium / arena.

It’s nothing to do with City. They won’t get involved in it. Landsec, etc are developing it. Offices, residential, etc.

Driving the change is The Mayfield Partnership – comprised of LandsecU+I, Manchester City Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and LCR – which formed in 2016 with a shared vision to create a thriving green district. Overall, Mayfield will provide over 2.3m sq ft GIA office space facilitating 13,000 new jobs, 1,500 homes, over 200,000 sq ft of retail and leisure, a new 650-bed hotel and 13-acres of public realm, including Mayfield Park – the city’s first new park in over 100 years.

Off more interest as regards transport close by.

Transport for Greater Manchester has acquired Downing Street Industrial Estate in Ardwick for around £15m, according to market sources.

It is unclear what TfGM plans to do with the site but it is understood the acquisition is related to the Bee Network.

When the North Stand is built some fans will mill around before and after games and the transport may cope better, I reckon that's what the club and TfGM are hoping for anyway. Time will tell on that. Plus the walking routes to Piccadilly (and Sandhills Metrolink for the Bury line) will be nicer, hopefully.

The lines don't really go all over the place even though it looks like that on the maps so it isn't an easy or cheap development option rail-wise. Re-opening Park station would do pretty much the same thing in terms of destinations and cost a huge lot less.

What’s needed are more park and rides about a mile or two from the ground in all directions. I would park there and get the bus instead of parking as close to the ground as I can without getting caught in traffic. More bus lanes around the Etihad just for match days would be good as well.
