Nottingham Forest (A) | Post Match Thread

Have just watched the highlights as I couldn’t be arsed when I got in last night. I came away thinking we’d played well and I still think that but just a few observations. We had so many clear cut chances to win the game. Individual error, a couple of good saves and a bag full of tame efforts really. We have to be better than that because we’re as weak as a puppy defensively. Also just saw Haaland go down when he was through. What the fuck was he thinking? Not a chance that was a foul.

What concerns me most is the fact that we simply won’t tackle. Look at Laporte and Rodders for their goal. Basketball marking and they should be embarrassed. I’ve said this before, we wait for mistakes or interceptions every single time. That ball shouldn’t have got near the 6 yard box. We’re as soft as shit.

Positives again that we kept the ball well on the most part and at least played forwards. Happy to see Phil back in the team, although he needs to finish the one he tries to square to Haaland. Grealish did well again, he looks to be enjoying his football more and it shows.

Put it down to bad luck and go again. We can’t dwell on it and need to twat Bournemouth next weekend.

I cannot agree. Foden flattered to deceive. There was no sharpness to his play and it is easy to see why Pep has not regularly picked him.

To me the turning point in the game was where he totally fluffed it when two on one on goal with Haaland. It gave Forrest hope and sowed doubt that we would score a second.

Nearly all season, for whatever reason, Phil Foden has plateaued for City and England. It happens to young players and Phil needs to rebuild his confidence and desire by hard work and concentrating on doing the simple things well. Hopefully he can realise his potential as one of the best prospects in world football.

Slightly harsh. The two on one the ball bobbled badly at the vital time he was deciding to shoot or pass, but his indecision didn't help matters.

I will agree though his progress appears to have stalled after a meteoric upward trajectory. It can happen with young players. Mason Mount seems to be going through similar struggles at Chelsea. I thought Foden would go on to be world class, Gazza with a more steady disposition. He still might but it's looking more likely he'll be another decent squad player sadly.

I said I'd sleep on it and I'd feel better in the morning. Nope, wrong. It still bloody stings!

Same. The second I woke up was thinking about it.

Ain't that the bloody truth, though? If we hadn't played so brilliantly against Arsenal (and by the way, we were better in the first half than many are saying, even there), I'd just be stoic and say, “Aaah, off season!”.
This one's hard to take. Thank God we've got Leipzig this week.
Not that that will be easy. They got a good result yesterday, and they're a useful team.

I cannot agree. Foden flattered to deceive..........
What?!?!? Yes, he was totally guilty for fucking up such an easy pass, but he was our best player on the pitch, he was direct, he was running at defence like we haven't seen him in a while, everything good came from him. Who flattered to deceive is KdB who has been generally crap since the new contract and the WC particularly and Pep with seeing out the games doing nothing to change them.

If you’re blaming Ederson for that today, to put it bluntly fuck off everybody has been crying out for Foden he was shite, as were both Haaland and KDB the only two I’d give marginal credit were Rodri & Dias.

That goal should have been a consolation not an equaliser.

Ps I’ve had 10+ pints sorry for any grammar issues.

Quite articulate actually. I'm impressed. I wouldn't be able to pick up a pen or sit down at a keyboard.
In fact I'd probably be under the table.

Just got back and what a shit day it has been. City guilty of wastefulness, sloppiness and carelessness. Foden, Kev, Erling, Laporte & Rodri all missed gilt edge chances to put the game to bed. In the first half we should have been 3 up, but we seem to want to pass, pass, pass to score the beautiful goal and end up messing up.

Everybody around me could sense what was coming in that last 5 or 10 mins. Pep needs to quit this hybrid back 3/back 4 nonsense. Phil’s decision making is terrible at the moment, that attempted pass to Erling was shite, seems his confidence has gone, he could have rolled it in himself. Erling blazing over again after hitting the bar, poor! Looks like it should have been a penalty when Pep got booked, was it? Their goal went to var and we thought it was offside, especially when Haaland threw the ball back to Ederson who placed it for a free kick. Must have been close.
Decent summary of the issues that bud; exactly how it looked on tv too.

100% this
KDB in a very worrying run of form since wc
Misplaced passes all over the place
He’s just not himself atm
I think he may need a break but he’s not going to get one given the run of games we have

Is 1-0 not good enough?

Shore up the team and get out of there and keep ourselves top of the league. Instead he sat on his hands and let them change and overload us and they scored.
When Ake was used as fullback the team were making very few chances so Pep found a solution using Bernie in a play everywhere role, this necessitated a back 3 which became as back 5 when defending with the MFs dropping back to cover. This had worked all game and in the previous two. The major issue yesterday was not taking the chances that the system had created, a risky way of playing, like this, its essential that the chances are taken as there is always a possibility that the opposition will score , happened in all three games. Forrest got lucky and I don't agree that the left flank was that overloaded the City players stood like statues whilst the Forrest players ran past them, I mean what was Laporte doing? Play the game again today and City runout 3-1 or more

horrible defending on their goal.

Bernardo, Laporte, Rodri all at fault for the assist can be made there.

then watch Wood how he can arrive from outside the box and connect with that cross. Walker imo should have been clearing that cross.

Agree re Foden stalling but considering his age 21 he is a long way before he peaks and will be much much more than a decent squad player

Seen it before when Walker loses a man behind him

Just received this from a Forest ST holder…

Big point for us especially looking at other results. Really enjoyed watching city though absolute quality and noisiest fan's this season by far at forest

That can't be right, everyone knows we have no fans or history!

Just watched the highlights back and we battered them. It was just one of those days, we missed some sitters. Not sure how we didn't get a pen and if you watch their goal, one of their players pulls one of ours down in the box, so not sure how it stood.

Shit happens though. We fight on!

I thought we played with the urgency that we’ve been lacking for most of the season, especially in the build up play

For whatever reason, we lacked the usual composure we usually have once we get chances. A lot of our play was really good but then we would try to force the final ball or shot.

I’d like to put it down to being one of those days because it’s rare we are super wasteful when we create chances. But then that would also be ignoring the fact we can’t seem to string a good run together and never teams that get at us really fancy their chance of scoring. As we saw against Everton, we score and then seem to relax a bit too much and let teams have a chance of getting back into the game.

I don’t know, yesterday was just a kick in the bollocks because we created plenty. It’s not like we were poor. On another day, we would’ve hammered them but we’re fighting for a league title and we can’t be throwing games away like this anymore or we’ll run out of games.

I still think we need to start finding some top defenders that are not injury prone and not square pegs in round holes and start looking at some midfielders with energy.

We can all laugh at liverpool and that Klopp has burnt out his team but we’re only a season or two away from that too if we don’t start bringing some new quality into the club.

Ah well, just watched MOTD.

Fuckinell, Arse had some luck and we had absolutely none.

Villa doing their best to give Arse chances to score and they didn't take them yet Villa remaining in the game and going in front twice, could've been a 3rd time if the shot off the bar hits an unsuspecting goalie on the back of the head and goes in!
The 4th goal is the stuff we all dream of but rarely happens.

Compare to our game and those chances where usually the ball ends up in the back of the net, if not from the first effort but from ricochets, rebounds or whatever. (Think Arse's 3rd and the Laporte header and Haaland chance off the bar).

As for the Haaland Tug, players have been sent off for much less than that as last man, not a pen as probably outside box but not nothing either.

Any other day we win that comfortably, freak results yesterday and we have clawed back the lead over the last 4 games.

All to play for, Arse will think all their Christmas's came at once yesterday after we beat them Mid week, this is far from over though.

Frustrating result, but the performance was excellent (minus the finishing, that is). Not our day. Even Haaland missed a clear chance (or two). Shit happens.

That game was probably ideal for Alvarez. But Pep couldn't afford to drop KDB or sub him off earlier after his performance at Arsenal. KDB wasted about 10 attacks with poor shots and passes. Not his day.

Foden wasted a big chance, but, IMO, his overall performance was good.

In football, nothing is guaranteed. Games like yesterday's happen on a regular basis. Those who think they have the solutions should become managers.

I like the new formation with Bernie, we play a lot better with him than with Lewis. It's not ideal, of course, but having two defensive FBs in Walker and Ake would stifle our attack. At least one of the FBs should be good in the build-up play and attack, especially against poor or high-pressing teams.
