Varane injury delays Pepe departure

RUBÉN JIMÉNEZ. MADRID 08/15/2013

Manchester City is hot on the heels of Pepe but Real Madrid's only response will be: "Pepe is not for sale". Injury to Varane, means the Portuguese is currently a starter in Ancelotti's side and it is unclear for how long.

Varane has been out on the sidelines for over three months and the Frenchman is yet to be given a date for his return to action. The centre-back was last season's sensation and returned to the group the day before the Chelsea game. He did not play in the friendly and the following day only featured in the first 30 minutes of the first training session at St Louis. His current irregular condition makes Pepe an essential player in the squad.

Even if the Frenchman made a miraculous recovery for tomorrow, selling Pepe would be too risky. The Portuguese would be a great addition to have on the bench to bolster the team's defensive options.

The departure of Albiol means there are just four centre-backs in the squad: Ramos, Pepe, Varane and Nacho. If Pepe were to depart it would leave Real with a worrying gap in the heart of its defence. 'Los Blancos' would have to venture into the transfer market to sign a replacement, which would not come on the cheap. The only way the club could let Pepe go would be if a world-class player was brought in, and world-class defenders usually have world-class price tags.

This is the key post for me - If VARANE is injured then no way will Pepe be allowed to leave unless you see RM sign a new CB.

Think this one is dead

if we sign pepe this will only hamper nastasic's further development. In the near future nastasic will be one of the best defenders in the premier league. Under kompany guidance he will become as good as kompany. Nastasics's decision making and poisitioning are good. He is only missing for the start off the season we have lescott and boyata who are well capable of covering him.

Really dont think pepe is the option at 20+ million... I hope we tell them where to stick it if thats what they are asking!
We cant say for sure he ll play well in the prem and not become a liability
anyone thinking Demichelis is too old/ slow take a look at this from last season....

How abot sign dimichelis loan him to madrid sign pepe then when varanes recovered get dimechelis back as cover easy.
we should have enough cover in rodwell, he looked good at CB for everton and people where talking about him being a future england defender at the time, dont know why nobody has thought about this since he signed?

Quite correct. This is the position that he was being heralded as England's future star in the making and I think he would be awesome there given time.

Oh and welcome to the Bluemoon mad house by the way! I respect anyone who comes on here and just jumps in at the deep end in the Transfer Forum during the transfer window!!

Kudos mate!! :-)

Transfer news: Manchester City fail in bid to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe and will turn their attentions to Atletico centre-back Martin Demichelis

The Argentinian was part of Manuel Pellegrini's Malaga side last season and could leave Los Rojiblancos without playing a competitive game for the club

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is attempting to persuade Argentinian international Martin Demichelis in his attempt to fix his faltering defence after the club’s pursuit of Real Madrid defender Pepe proved unsuccessful.

Demichelis played under Pellegrini at Malaga last season, but he joined Atletico Madrid on a one-year deal after his contract expired. However, it seems he could leave the club without playing a competitive fixture for the Spanish Super Cup winners, after Pellegrini identified the 32-year-old as the solution to his problems.

The Chilean manager already has Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic and Joleon Lescott to choose from as well as shifting Javi Garcia back from his usual defensive midfield position, but he is keen on having a fourth centre-back after City conceded eight goals in just three pre-season games.

Demichelis has 37 caps for his country and was a key figure in Malaga’s Champions League quarter-final run last season, having joined the club from Bayern Munich in 2011.

Having already spent over £90m on the acquisitions of Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, Pellegrini is willing to continue his summer spending to ensure he adds experience to the defence.

His problem was compounded further by the ankle injury picked up by Nastasic during the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong that will keep the central defender out for at least another month.

Pellegrini had admitted his admiration of Pepe, and director of football Txiki Begiristain had flown to Spain to try and negotiate a deal, but Carlo Ancelotti’s preference to keep hold of the Portuguese international has forced City to look elsewhere.

Fuck Sake.......... Is Demichelis a viable short-term answer? Is he any better than the other 32 year old we've just let leave on a free?

Yep, and we already got long-term answer. Nastasic & Rekik - future 10 years.

How on earth do you know this ?

Are you absolutely certain that a partnership of Nastasic & Rekik will become strong enough in the air to mark a pair like Negredo & Dzeko for instance ? Or fast enough to contain, players with the pace of Bellamy for instance ? Or could it be that only one of them would be able to play at a time ? Or perhaps only one of them will make it ? Or neither ?

Both left sided too

Probably because his potential in midfield is even greater.

i don't mind pepe or any other defender coming that pelli deems good enough but it does seem a little paniky, we still have lescott and micah around and nasty wont be out that long.

This is all to do with CL IMO needs another Mr Reliable. (I know I know I shouldn't have posted the last bit) :-)

I think the concern surrounds the possibility that Nasty or,worse still, kompany, may be unavailable in the middle of the season when we are deep into all competition.

The above two aren't good enough to cover for any extended period imo.

good point.

If it were up to me, I wouldn't touch Pepe with a 9 foot pole but since MP wants him, let him get his players and I'll support them.

And being out injured for most of the season, he hasn't had time to be seriously tested at the back.

Manchester City believe their hopes of signing Pepe could rest on whether Real Madrid bring in Gareth Bale, sources told ESPN.

City have registered an interest in the defender as manager Manuel Pellegrini looks to find a fourth centre-back for his squad. But Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said a month ago that Pepe is not for sale and City have not made a bid for the Portugal defender.

However, they feel the situation could change either if Pepe asks to leave the Bernabeu - which is unlikely - or if Real need to raise funds for a marquee signing such as Bale.

Pepe remains former Real manager Pellegrini’s top target to strengthen his back four but the Chilean will not make a signing for the sake of it if he proves unavailable.

The club are determined to learn the lessons from last summer when they failed to secure the players former manager Roberto Mancini wanted and four of their five arrivals struggled.

With Matija Nastasic, the one triumph from their August 2012 spending spree, injured and Kolo Toure having joined Liverpool, they will begin their Premier League campaign with only two fit senior specialist central defenders, Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott.

But Nastasic could be fit for next week’s game at Cardiff and Pellegrini, whose four main summer signings were secured comparatively quickly, will not be afraid to end the transfer window without further acquisitions if Real are intent on keeping Pepe.

Pellegrini was non-committal about further additions in his Friday press conference, saying: "We will see. Maybe not."

He just made a mistake against Betis. Both him and Demichelis have made mistakes now. Don't want either.
