Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

Logically going to Celtic makes perfect sense.

Roberts has all the skill in the world so the only thing that will hold him back is his size/frame. At Celtic he'll constantly have the ball and he'll be up against very physical players.

If he can overcome his physical limitation up there then he's well on his way to fulfilling his potential.

It's now down to him to put the effort in and the management at Celtic to encourage him
 
With De Bruyne now injured, I think this is a bizarre move. I despise Celtic but hope he gets the playing time he deserves and comes back a better player and slightly more physical.

As another poster stated, what is wrong with him going to a Premier League club where he would gain experience - ala Joe Hart ?

Don't think 18 months at Celtic is a good move for the player, or City !
 
Barker went to the Championship and it was a waste of time, despite him being a far more physically developed player than Roberts, so I can't see anything to suggest Roberts would fair better. Celtic will be a physical test, but at the same time they should be dominating games and he should get more of a free licence to do his own thing and develop his game. The Championship is probably a bit too competitive for him at this point in time, it's easy to imagine him getting lost in games and falling out of favour, like he did at Fulham.

Roberts doesn't need to be standing about waiting to get into the game. Celtic being completely dominant is a good thing for him.
 
Good loan as long as there is a recall clause, maybe we give them some cash to recall him. If Pep is coming then he's the type of player he'd love imo.

GK is a completely different animal than an outfield player. There is competition from one other person. Look at Serge Gnabry at West Brom and Patrick Bamford at Crystal Palace -- it is very, very difficult for a loaned youth player to get a good look nowadays. The risks are so high for these teams that they can't risk their future using someone else's kid that they won't even profit off of. If Roberts couldn't get continual playing time at Fulham last season, what in the world would make you think he'd get to play in the Premier League while on loan?

This is a good move for him and will help him develop.
 
Fcuk me as club we bend over for other clubs we wanted it to be 6 months Celtic 18 months and who wins the club who we are helping and doing then a favour.


Or is it city as a a club only look at what's best for the player if so you can't argue with the maturity.

He obviously was well out of his depth there last year, physically as much as anything.

Celtic are a good loan destination. They get Europa or Champions league games and Denayer did enough to get into international football playing for them.

But his names not Iheanacho so you're not allowed to big him up on what is perceived as little evidence.

You think his performances here which amount to 4 minutes in a PL game and two subs in the CC of 35 & 15 minutes plus a few youth appearances (of which only the early games showed his abilities) would be enough to convince a lower end PL team to play him?

Think it's a good move personally , easy they are in a shit league but it will be a similar playing style to city, dominating most games and will give him the physical test. Also if they get champions league it will give him valuable experience there, though strange with the injury and pep possibly coming loaning out one of our best prospects for 18 months

Again, yet Iheanacho was labelled a 20 goal a season striker last summer. That's before any minutes in the first team.

Did you question that? Probably not, you would have had I said it :)

Roberts is one of the few young players out there I have had the pleasure of watching outside of City, before he came here. Yes I do think he has enough about him to challenge for a spot in a lower part of the table club. I didn't say start, but 'challenge'.

I'm not sure why you think those minutes etc arent enough for a Bournemouth, Sunderland or Norwich etc but enough for Celtic. That's rather odd.

And looking at it your way, what convinced City to sign him?
 
18 month loan is better due to Celtic being loaded with attacking options. They'd have no incentive to play him on a 6 month loan over the rest of their attacking options, knowing he wouldn't be there next season. Good luck to him, hopefully it provides him with the stepping stone needed to progress into the first team here at City.
