No one else?

You mean apart from the other teams at the bidding table?
what teams? Please enlighten. Chelsea wad the only rumor, and they never put in a bid.and had we lost him we simply could have gotten Koulibally, Knoche, Sule, Jesus or my original cheap Suggestion over the summer Veltman. And they'd all be about the same level as Mangala. Better even we could have gone for an experienced guy like Hummels, or Miranda to hold the forth until one of the youth players step up.

Point being there is nothing fatal about not getting Mangala. I have no doubt that Koulibally and Jesus will be just as Good, and if Gimenez and Sule keep up there performances, they'd be even better. There is no shortage of young great CB. We didn't magically source out the best that was Must have.

And just for accuracy sake, Mangala is not so good on the ball. You should watch Jesus and Sule to see what young defenders who are good on the ball look like. Certainly not like Eliaquim, who is decent but labored on the ball.

You have no clue as to what bids were made by interested parties......do you honestly believe we would have paid the amount we did if we didn't have competition? This wasn't a half hour deal concocted over a macchiato in the Trafford Centre.....we spent months securing the signature of one of the worlds most sought after talents, and for good reason,we didn't want anyone else.....we got our man.

And in the vast majority of his play he has proved why.

I like the way you see football. Excelent posts!
Mangala could come good but also Nastasic could become a world class CB. There was no need to splash money on a CB, we needed someone to backup Yaya and a real class winger for the first 11.

He has a big heart and that is a pre requisite of any top class centre half.

Totally agree - also think that he's a thinker which is rare in modern day centre halves. He's been open about his poor moments in a City shirt and has said that he is more critical of his game than anyone else. He will go on to be a world class defender for years to come and this thread will have the comedy value that early threads about Toure/Silva etc had!
Again another one who misses the point. This not about Mangala really, it's about making good decisions. Whether Mangala goes on to be great is not necessarily the issue. The point is we made a choice to splurge a considerable portion of our restricted finances on a player who clearly was not going to start.

You say this as if it's a statement of fact, when it absolutely is not. It's entirely possible - likely if you ask me - that we bought Mangala with the clear intention that he and Kompany would be our first choice pairing and MDM and Boyata would be backups. Now for whatever reason we are bedding Mangala in more slowly. Perhaps because he hasn't impressed as much as we might have expected, who knows. But to say that the plan all along was that Mangala would not be first choice is wild peculation, and given how much we spent on him, it would seem pretty likely that you are mistaken.

After nearly every single match people say that he performed well yet two seconds later everyone talks of what a poor season he is having.

Which is it?

Don't recall Mike Doyle getting too many England caps ;)

Are you basing that on anything, or just naming all the French CB's you can think of? A quick search suggests that Mangala started their last game alongside Varane, whereas Perrin is 29 and has never been capped, neither has Zouma, while Sakho and Koscielny weren't even called up to the squad last time around. Unless you've been on the phone to Deschamps recently, it's hard to see where your assesment has come from? Not that international recognition means much, just ask Nasri, but I'm still curious as to why or how you came up with this announcement.
