Otamendi was the right sided defender, he should have been the one in the massive gap between Sagna and Kolarov/Mangala (who rightly went over to help him out)that Morata run into before taking the shot. That is exactly where Otamendi should have been.

If he was in position he would have swept up the ball coming off Kolarov or he would have been able to tackle Morata/block the shot.

So are you saying Otamendi should just let Morata run into space untracked?

He ran towards a player already surrounded by 2 defenders. If he'd been smart enough to hold his position then Morata wouldn't have had any space on the edge of the box to run into.

Go and actually watch the video, it's clear as day Otamendi was at fault.

I have watched the videos, when the ball is played forward Otamendi is beside Morata who starts running across the pitch, as that's his man he tracks him. He doesn't leave it to Mangala to pick him up because Mangala is under a high ball.

They get a huge slice of fortune then which completely wrong foots Otamendi and leaves Morata with a clear sighter.

i have watched the video all 4 at back were at fault but otamendi less so. u r seeing the sequence as an individual event.

1) let me explain the event first both the full backs are at fault sagna let go of the defensive line and went further forward.
2)kolarov went too close to cuarduo or whatever his name is, no idea why. he should have been a couple of meters away from him and near his defensive partners.
3)if u watch the critical mistake was done by both mangala and sagna one of which should have picked up morata.
4)morata was on the left side which we all agree was mangala's, before all this happened he was sucked forward by the other forwards movement into the midfield which was a grave mistake.
5)finally sagna should have been on the other side of otamendi as cover.
6)otamendi gets flatfooted by the deflection and morata produces a stunning finish.
7)even during recovery mangala could have taken up a better defensive position to pressure morata.

Otamendi is a good player, but he doesn't look any better than Denayer. For £32 million I'd want a top CB or someone who has the potential to be a top CB. Otamendi is neither IMO.

I think we'd have been better off giving Denayer the chance as our third choice CB instead of signing Otamendi. Denayer has the potential to be world class.
