Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after tearing his hamstring in Argentina’s 3-2 win over Nigeria on Wednesday, according to reports.

The Manchester City striker has been plagued by muscle problems in recent years, but his latest injury will hit hardest with Argentina one of the favourites to win the tournament in Brazil.

Aguero pulled up late in the first half of their victory over Nigeria, which sealed top spot in Group F and set up a last 16 clash with Switzerland on July 1.
The 26-year-old will not play again in Brazil after undergoing tests on Thursday morning, according to Argentina newspaper Clarin.

Ezequiel Lavezzi replaced Aguero when he limped off in the 38th minute against Nigeria, and the Paris Saint-Germain striker will be favourite to start alongside Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain in Argentina’s next match against Switzerland.

We have forwards of the same style as Aguero and others, with a different style, like Lavezzi, who came in and handled himself well on the wings and helped us cover spaces,’ Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella said after the Nigeria game.

A succession of hamstring, calf and thigh problems limited Aguero’s impact during Manchester City’s title-winning campaign, the Argentine missing 23 games for Manuel Pellegrini’s side over the course of the season.

He has given us so much so no question we stand by him and gets him fit and healthy

Those who say sell him are real twats

He's always going to be a legend at City but how long do you stand by him? I'm saying next season because if next season turns out like this (playing around half the games) that will be his third season where he's picking up these type of injuries. When does a valuable asset start becoming a liability? Sounds harsh but that's the reality of the situation

Sergio may well have a different take on City now, especially if Argentina go on to win the WC without him. He may perceive that it was our asking him to play in the league run in when not fully fit that has cost him his stab at glory. Who knows? Watch this space.

I do think there were some matches that he shouldn't have played in (or he should have played less minutes) but it's all hindsight. Problem is when he's fit he's a class above the other strikers and managers are always tempted to pick him - after all why should City give a shit about Argentina?Perhaps next season with all the strikers fit he will be used more sparingly and rested more often but last season we never had that luxury (with Jovetic the invisible man for much of the season).

On the other hand, if he hadn't "proved" himself to be fit in the run-in he may not have been selected to go to Brazil at all. A gamble all round and one worth taking I'd suggest. The priority now is a good rest for as long as possible.

Re: Sergio Aguero

off Fifa.com....

The severity of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero's muscle injury is still uncertain but the Argentina team insist that reports of the striker missing the duration of the FIFA World Cup™ are "nonsense".

Aguero came off in the 38th minute of the 3-2 Group F victory in Porto Alegre and was anxiously waiting the results of tests to find out the extent of the injury.

"It has not been confirmed that it is a tear, it could be a strain," the Argentine team's press officer Andres Ventura told AFP on Thursday morning. Aguero, 26, hobbled off the field to be replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi, but Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella said only that he had a "muscle problem" after the match, while the player himself left the stadium without speaking to journalists.

"It is a muscle injury, as Sabella already said after the match. To go from that to saying that he might not be able to play again in the World Cup is nonsense," added Ventura, hitting out at reports published in Argentina about the severity of the problem.

A simple strain could leave Aguero on the sidelines for around 10 days, but a tear would likely keep him out for around two to three weeks, thereby bringing his World Cup to a premature end. Aguero endured an injury-affected season in England with Manchester City and has not produced his best form so far at the World Cup.

His fitness adds to Sabella's concerns in attack, where Rodrigo Palacio is recovering from a minor ankle injury and Gonzalo Higuain is only getting back to peak fitness after a spell on the sidelines of his own. The win against Nigeria took Argentina through to a Round of 16 tie against Switzerland in Sao Paulo next Tuesday.
