When asked about their previous clubs or reasons for moving, I always think players should follow Guardiola’s example with prospective transfers and simply refuse to elaborate on such questions: ‘I had a wonderful X years at Y but my focus now is entirely on what we are doing here at Z.’

If you choose to deviate from that script, then you should accept that your words will have some form of impact- not necessarily positive- with those who once cheered you.
