With all due respect. Why do you feel obliged to "prefer one of the two"?
Do you feel this way about ajax and feyenoord? Ac and inter? Olympakos and panathinikos?
Catch my drift, they should both be insignificant scum to any city fan unless you had a real reason to support one of them (lived in Glasgow, avid supporters within the family etc). Unfortunately your proddie catholic theory is everything that's wrong with the full thing. I'm catholic and I couldn't despise Celtic or rangers more than I already do.
Down to family mate. I have a few teams who I keep an eye on their results (I wouldn't say I support them, more follow them). My old fella's from Halbeath, just outside Dunfirmline, so the 1st game I ever went to was Dunfirmline (about 1980). I follow their results & want them to do well. I suppose that's the main reason I have an interest in Scottish football. All my old fella's side of the family are Rangers, so that's why I'd always prefer a Rangers win over Celtic.
I also follow a wee bit of Italian football due to relatives with Torino being the team I'd want to do well. I just love watching football.
Having said all that, I'm not really too concerned how any of them do as long as City keep on winning.
I don't think I'm the only person to 'follow' another team north of the boarder. There were always loads of half City half Rangers hats & scarves at Maine Road in the 80's (along with a few City/Celtic) & I whenever I went to watch the rags play with mates, I'd always see more united/Celtic hats & scarves that united/Rangers.
Unfortunately (for them) all of my mums side of the family are rags but thankfully I could never be converted.
I wholeheartidy agree that any sectarianism in football (as well as life in general) is extremely petty & pathetic. Unfortunately people hide behind religion for all sorts of reasons & use it as an excuse for their actions far too much. However, a link between 2 clubs due to religion (if this is indeed the case, as I've not had any time to do any research???) doesn't have to have anything to do with sectarianism.
