Ref Watch City Games - 2023/24

thats the problem he wasnt consistent, he didnt book burn for scything down rodri when he was breaking towards goal and then literally minutes later books bernardo for exactly the same thing, if anything burns was worse as hes done him from behind
Yep, Bernardo’s was actually a genuine attempt for the ball, Burns just deliberately stopped the attack

It still needed to be added on, whether it was 5 seconds of 30 seconds.
There were 8 minutes injury time in the first half. That’s an additional 18% of time above the 45.

But he blew up for half time on the exact second 8 minutes were up. So 0% of time added on.

It’s statistically almost inconceivable and backed up when you watched the game because there were stoppages in play during those 8 minutes.

It’s pretty clear that time doesn’t need to be added on - it’s basically whatever the ref feels like doing from one minute to the next (pun intended).

. I know that there a few on here who think we are all referee bashers, but it was clear these match officials do not fully referee in accordance with the Laws of the Game otherwise please explain how Newcastle were caught offside and Ake takes the resulting free kick from inside the Newcastle half?? Just 1 pedantic example, but If you are going to do the job, do it 100% correct!
I think now the free kick is taken from where the offside player became active rather than his position when the ball was played? So if he was coming back from an offside position it’s quite possible to have the free kick taken in his own half. That aside, the ref was horribly inconsistent

I agree that the first half should have had more. Rodri got booked in those 8 minutes.

It doesn’t need to be added on, but it should be.

I think the ref blew on 8 minutes as the game had got niggle and feisty and he was allowing the break to calm the players down. He should have played longer though.

Yep. Referees shouldn’t have that kind of influence and decide how long a team should have to score a goal. Add the time on that should be added on and that’s that.

For years we had the farce of almost every match having 1 minute in the first half, 3 minutes in the second.

It's always been nonsense.

It’s a good thing Bobb stayed on his feet to score as so many players would have gone down but knowing that ref, although a clear penalty he wouldn’t have given it ( despite more contact than the foul he gave the Dippers keeper v us) with Var using the not clear and obvious excuse to back him up
He is a Manc born supporting Dipper, who uses IIRC Droylsden (or a similar team from that part of Manchester) as 'his team'. He was outed as a Dipper when seen in their end at the 16 Carabao final. Where we beat the Dips on pk Yaya doing the business. So hardly unbiased towards us since....

I thought the tackle on Doku before Newcastle scored one of their goals should’ve been a free kick, but they weren’t going to pull it back for the same reason they didn’t for the Dias on Gordon challenge before Bernardo’s goal, atleast the ref was consistent.
The biggest issue is the playing on after an obvious offside, time for semi automated offside technology to come in now surely
I'd agree on Doku - he may have got the ball, but it was reckless, and could have been a foul. I've not seen any alternative angles, so it's hard to tell how close he was to Doku.

It was also the start of the attack, which was with Isak just 2 passes, and less than 10 seconds later. VAR should have been looking at it, but as he did take the ball

Gordon's incident was nearly a minute before the goal, and there were something like 14 or 15 passes, including a couple of deflections off Newcastle players. No way VAR would go back that far.

Look at the yellows Rodri picks up when other players committing similar fouls aren’t. He has seven yellows, three more before the Palace game in April and he misses two games. He has to play 12 games and only pick up two yellow! He has had seven in 19. We cannot afford for him to miss games during March but I suspect refs are queuing up to chuck soft yellows his way knowing how important he is to us.
