Riyad Mahrez - 2018/2019 performances

Have seen signs of improvement recently. Hopefully this can continue. He needs to score a great goal outside the box to increase his confidence, he might then feel he’s arrived and start to enjoy playing with the other fabulous players we have

I can’t work out whether he’s lacking confidence and trying too hard to impress with all these stupid dummy’s, stepovers and this rolling his foot over the ball bollocks or whether he just thinks he’s far better than he is.

One moment yesterday, I think it was De Bruyne who played him in down the right hand side of the box in the first half and he rolled his foot over the ball to control it. Why? Take a touch with your fucking instep and shoot you fucking idiot. It gave the defender time to get back and get a block in, so much for Pep and doing the “simple things” as Sterling put it.

Possibly, even hopefully, but he's had plenty of chances to face up the full back and get past him over the last few games against lower league teams and very rarely got past them.
He seems to be suffering some sort of confidence issue, Im sure he was a better player when we played Leicester.

I think he gets past them but then is unsure what ball to deliver, so it either gets blocked in the split second wasted or he turns back.

Yesterday, he put one ball in which was exactly the kind of pass Paul Walsh & Rosler used to score, from Beagrie, but it was just an easy catch for the keeper as nobody was there.

I don't think we have a definite plan of how to work with him.

I never expected him to gel straight away, however I did expect to see clear signs of improvement after nearly 6 months at the club....and quite frankly I don’t think we have. He was better today, but no more than a 6.5 out of 10. In fact I would contend that of the 6 midfielders and strikers out there, he was probably the least effective. On the assumption that you will disagree, who out of Jesus, Bernie, Ferna, Kev and Gundog do you think he was better than?

Aside from Kev, I don't think there was too much to choose between the other guys and Riyad but he was definitely better than 6.5 in my mind; although I don't tend to go in for giving marks out of ten. FWIW, whoscored do and they ranked him 8.26, with only KDB, Jesus and Bernie getting better scores.

Riyad has not lived up to expectations so far and that is frustrating but maybe you are a bit too down on him? He did manage four key passes; his one shot was on target but he also made five tackles, which is a lot and way more than any other player on the park (Dinho made one, albeit not in a full game) - not bad for such a fanny!

He might just need to relax a bit. He's under the kind of pressure to get in the team that he didn't face at Leicester, where he was assured of a start. At City, he's competing with Sane, Sterling, Bernado... His technical ability is there. His first touch is at Bernado levels. Perhaps mentally he needs to adjust?

After game the king pep said that
He was really pleased for the commitment, and especially with all the games in our legs and minds.

We have to improve a few things but we made good movements. I'm satisfied to be in next round and in the draw on Monday.
But always there is the same things but who can chenge it.one of those is Mahrez's marginalization by some blayers.why ?can asked last one danilo who is very near than mahrez but all the time given one pass.and before walker and bernardo ,sterling.
It gives them critical passes but can the coach really change that approach.
Finaly Mahrez is a tremendous player, very talented, but he has not been at his best for two or three months - and Sterling and Sane have. I'm sure he will come good again.
Thanks.

If you look at his club career, he's had the one season where he excelled and the rest was decidely average.
Maybe he's found his level as a bit part player at a 'bigger' club.
He's not of the level of Sane or Sterling

Worst case - you're right about Mahrez. So just whom do you want to start as backup given that we're in competition for at least 4 cups?

My take - Mahrez has enormous talent - and needs to adjust to our side. Pep demands all-out effort throughout games especially on defense.

Mahrez doesn't fit the mold of our wingers - exceptionally fast - able to beat their defenders for pace quickly - and then deliver a cross. He's simply not fast enough. Bernardo too suffered on the wing due to lack of pace.

So... Mahrez has a lot of talent - if we cant utilize him to his full capability on the wing... I'm sure that Pep will figure out how to play him elsewhere.
