Rodri - 2019/20 Performances

I am really starting to have my doubts about him.

Very good player one thing he doesn’t have that Fernandinho had in that position is turn of pace after winning the ball rodri can’t get away from them so he needs to learn to win and pass it.

Agreed, Fernandinho has/had the ability to burst 15-20 yards into opponents half and put them on back foot, Rodri unfortunately doesn’t

Painful as it was I've just watched the full game again - Rodri was excellent and it was the distribution from the back four - apart from Ferna -that was the problem. Rodri was getting frustrated when we were constantly gifting possession by hoofing the ball up field. His strength is possession, having the ball in tight spaces and he rarely gives it away. Considering how much he is closed down he seldom gets caught. He may do on the odd occasion and people pick up on that and then say it's an issue but it is not. He is a top player and an important one for us. I liked the fact that he was really pissed off at the end, the manner of the defeat hurt him and Bernardo the most it seemed.

But he’s not Fernandinho. He’s a different style of player.

He takes less touches when we want to play with a quicker tempo. He takes more touches when we're trying to slow the game down.

I understand about tempo
I see him take one touch too many when we need the ball move faster, it’s why he appears to be slow at times and why he’s been caught a a number of times I feel he still adjusting to PL pace

Defensive midfielder is he not??, there to break up play, pass to team mate, distribute the ball, that’s what they both do, Fernandinho could surge at opponents with ball, Rodri seems unable to, I’m not knocking him for that, just stating that we need someone to drive them back, debruyne and Bernardo kept having to drop deeper and deeper to try and get us going, we miss that driving force of Fernandinho badly at the moment

He was pretty good actually looked like he cared. the least of our problems. The whole back 4 needs replacing

I very much like Rodri - we have big issues on defense at CB and LB. Midfield play can only do so much to patch this up, especially given the way we play (high line).

Rodri is a pretty good defender when close to the ball - but for me he's mostly a metronome - able to control the pace of the game. Rodri almost never gives the ball away and when passed the ball almost always one-touches it to another open player in a more advanced position.

Next season I fully expect that we'll fix our CB/RB problems - at which point, Rodri will shine.
