Running thread

Shorter runs / fat burning.

I hear a lot about throwing in shorter runs if you want to burn fat / lose weight?

I went to a big field yesterday and ran 3km flat out- literally as fast as I could. I felt great afterwards but also alike id cheated for not doing my normal runs of anything from 5-15km at a more steady pace.

Does anyone know anything about this?
Longer and SLOWER to lose fat mate @Stuuuuuu is the best to ask.

I have had a mare with my running in the past 3 weeks. My left calf keeps playing up so have decided to run less and power walk instead. I went for a run last Wednesday and felt good, took it easy on the hills but I got carried away and ran for longer than planned. Low and behold my calf went again. Outside of walking and doing home workouts, I've rested my leg with ice and have carried out plenty of stretching. I went for my first run yesterday, a nice 30 minute flat run and it held out. I think my approach over the next month will be less 5 mile runs and more frequent 3 mil runs etc.
Get a foam roller for the calves mate, worked wonders on mine when I started out.

To be honest, whilst sprints are useful in that regard, I think their impact is easily overstated. Plus, it needs to be done in quite a particular, controlled manner. If it's any use, I've posted on this subject on pages 145, 146, 169, 177 and 205 of this thread.

Thanks mate. I ran the marathon last year and I was doing 120km per month and didn’t lose a great deal, always baffled me as my diet was ‘ok’

Yeah, did 5k in Heaton this morning, absolutely hammering it down from the second I stepped out of the car until I got back in it. I enjoy it though, makes me appreciate nice conditions when I brave the horrific ones.
Gotta embrace the elements mate, or you'll get nothing done living here. Personally, I actually love running in the rain. I find that if I just accept that I'm going to get soaked and embrace it, it's a pleasurable experience.

...or maybe it's just me!

Just heading out now, up the time from 25 to 28 mins, dont feel like it but pushing myself to do it

Been checking VO2 Max and says it's of a 74 year old. I'm 58, slightly overweight but it's actually gone up rather than down since started running 7 weeks ago. Resting heart rate ok at 68

Was out yesterday after work for 2.3m, muggy humid conditions made it difficult to get breathing properly but felt good afterwards.

On another note, out my run on Tuesday and met 2 elderly neighbours from the flat I moved out of 3 years ago. Haven't seen them since and genuinely been thinking about them during this time because of their age (both well in their 80s) without wanting to visit for obvious reasons. Was delighted to bump into them both out a walk together just came out of shielding. So yeah, the moral of this story is that it's good to get out and exercise both for physical reasons and because you never know who you might meet! Cheered me up mentally after meeting them both and was well worth a wee pit stop in my run for a 5 minute chat!

I'll try the 2.3m route again tonight, a bit further tomorrow morning and give myself a break on Sunday.

Good luck everyone, enjoy your weekend.

That's a good thing - you want your VO2 Max. to go up.

I tore 2 ligaments in my foot on the pitch in early Jan and sprained an ankle. It's been a long few months and this morning plucked up the will and energy to go running again.

Did 2.1km in 11 mins. It's been a long 5 or so months, i feel fucked..... :(

woo, 2nd 2.1 km run today, some light pain, foot holding up after 2 small runs in 3 days. Time was 1 second less :D 11:15

Well it’s now 2 weeks since I started running outdoors and the difference between that and running on a treadmill is astonishing. I can’t decide whether it’s easier or harder - on the one hand I think there’s more chance of picking up injuries compared to the treadmill, and I certainly ache more after an outdoors run, but on the other I’ve found it harder to do a stint on the treadmill these days. The time seems to drag by so much more than previous, so I think it’s safe to say I’m now fully converted to outdoors running. I’m still a complete novice, but I’ve managed a few 5k runs now and doing them in just over 32 minutes, so not exactly Haile Gebrselassie pace.

As for weather conditions, I much prefer it cool and rainy. Did a run in the pissing rain yesterday and loved it.

Good man! Love the last comment too, that’s how it should be. I was going to have the day off today, as neither of my kids were bothering, but changed my mind when I saw it was drizzling and thought fuck it, so off to Heaton I went. Now feel much better for having got my exercise out of the way and can look forward to food and beer, lol.

Just done 9 miles, certainly an eventful run.
Got wet, dried off, had a fucking firecracker thrown at me out of a car by some twat (shit it when it went off) then a fucking pigeon shit on my shoulder..... to top it off it fucking pissed down again!! Was aiming for 10 miles but was too close to home after 9 to want to carry on lol.
Bike again tomorrow then run again Sunday
