Running thread

Travelled up to Fleetwood parkrun this morning Ran up and down the coast. Slight breeze but good to run in. Time was 30:04.

Looked at the Garmin data and for a very short period my fastest speed was 10.1mph. Think there must have been a glitch on my watch!

After completing the Couch to 5k a few weeks ago I am going to do my first park run tomorrow. I’ve been hoping to run sub 30 minutes, went for a run yesterday and managed 29:29. Three months ago I could barely run for 90 seconds!
Like your namesake, who was always the last to finish the run at training when I used to go and watch in Wythenshawe Park, back in the 60s.

Well done mate. Which Parkrun?

Fantastic mate, hope you do it but to be honest imo don't get too hungry up in the time tomorrow

Bit gutted. There's a new parkrun in Coleraine Northern Ireland (Christie park) about 2 minutes walk from my sister's house where I stay when I'm home. I want that to be my 25th milestone and run it as a guest for first time. I can do that but had hoped I'd be able to have 25 milestone t shirt for it.

Another 64 miles done in August! Still going and improving. Although ran in Fleetwood saturday thinking nice and flat, the sea breeze destroyed me didnt have a drink so struggled and stopped at 8. Happy with the battle though! First 10k done in under an hour aswel this week first time in a long while. Coming up to 6 months without any alcohol this Monday

Tried to start running to help support my wife who’s doing the London marathon next year.

Feel like I’m working up the distances and my cardio but my knees are just in pieces. I’ve got crunching sounds when I go up stairs, pain if I’m walking down stairs. Pain if I’m sat in a chair too long. I’ve tried to build in some strength training but doing squats etc is just more pain.

Could do with shifting some weight which won’t be helping I’m sure but perhaps it’s something under the surface.

I don’t know if I need to just go to a physio or it’s something worse.

Make sure you are gradually building up to the marathon, your wifes training plan won't start properly until January, so you want to gradually build up to the distance required week 1.

Most marathon beginners plans start at an amount of running that is way too much for somebody who doesn't run at all. Most of the time they assume somebody has run a 10k or a half, they usually have 2 hours+ of running in week 1.

So I'd advise a slow build up to avoid aches and pains in the knee, before January there is time for maybe a beginners 10k plan that should get your body adjusted to start a marathon plan.

Maybe see the physio if the knee pain is now persistent and not easing off.

2nd sub 19 run in a week a couple of days ago, after breaking 19 for the first time last Friday.

Down to 18:28 now.

Goals for the rest of the year:
- Get under 40:00 in the 10k, still not done it, haven't raced it enough either.
- Break 18:00 for the 5k.

I know the latter is probably more of a long shot but I feel like I'm in that phase at the moment where I don't know where my ceiling is, just keep finding more in the tank.

Cross country season coming soon, looking forward to it.

What shoes are you running in?

Six months off the beer is ace mate, especially through the summer, I'm down to 11 days off it after falling off the wagon over the summer like a dick head!!
The boozing and running just don't mix for me, your miles better off without it
