If they were being pushed back to Moscow and Putin's life was under threat I'd agree. If all they are losing is territory gained since 2014 then they'll just instigate something to give them an excuse to blame the West and then pull back to both lick their wounds and rearm. Push them back until they are out of the territory and then admit Ukraine into NATO, nothing will happen.

Russia has already been "backed into a corner".

Their armies were routed in Kyiv and Kharkiv. Their naval flagship was sunk. Their Black sea fleet has been driven from Sevastopol. Their iconic bridge has been blown up twice.

No nukes.

This should tell you something about how empty their threats are, and also why they are making them.
