Russian invasion of Ukraine

Considering there will be a meeting between Selenzky, Trump and Putin: It's a good moment for negotiations. Russia's summer offensive has failed terribly and the economy is under big stress. The big European countries stay more or less stabile and will finally build up their military potential. It could be that there isn't much pressure needed to reach a ceasefire.

The question is, what happens in the aftermath because the moment the shooting ends, Russia's military is rebuilding rapidly which grows the possibility of a big European war in the next few years. It could also be the case that Putin will continue the war against Ukraine after some months of rebuilding while Ukraine probably had to disband big parts of their military in the meantime and is in the middle of a constitutional crisis with upcoming potential chaotic or unfree elections and shrinking military supplies by its allies.

I hope everybody in Europes seats knows that the real race will start the moment the ceasefire is effective. If it hadn't started already.

This is why the sanctions against Russia shouldn’t stop when the shooting ends. In fact they should be intensified. Every penny transferred from Europe to Russia will be deployed to fund future aggression against this continent. It’s insanity on behalf of Europe to facilitate that, knowing what they know about Russia.

Good posting and this is another important thing. There will be a lot of pressure to lift sanctions after a reached ceasefire.

Most of the world and esp Europe havnt stopped buying Russian gas and oil.

This is fair comment, although the quantities and margins have shrunk into Europe considerably, given the mode of delivery.

Once this is over, greater focus needs to be directed to this issue. It’s simply the application of common sense. Every drop of oil we buy from Russia, either directly or indirectly, is another sum we will need to spend on defence to counter that. It simply makes no sense whatsoever to fund your enemy (which is unquestionably what Russia is) in increasing or even maintaining its military might. To provide assistance in this way is nothing short of insanity.

It isn’t complicated. Its simple maths.

Ironically, the great satan Trump was banging on about this very issue for years, and was mocked by our much more sophisticated European elite because of this.

I suspect Trump is looking for a much more wide ranging deal with Russia than simply a ceasefire in Ukraine and has been thinking much more strategically about this conflict from the start.

I don’t subscribe to the notion that Trump is stupid, because his levels of cunning allied to his well tuned survival and political instincts render that description to be neither accurate nor fair, but the notion that he is capable of meaningful and effective strategic thought is fucking comical.

And I’m sure there were plenty of other reasons for any mocking that was going on.

Trump was specifically mocked for making the very point that you made in your post above which is why I mentioned it in my reply.

It's fine by me that people constantly mock Trump, why should I care? I only mention this in the context of this thread because people's expectations of any deal that Trump makes with Putin should be viewed in a much wider context than the situation in Ukraine.

I highly doubt that Trump made the very point I made in my post above because he is significantly less articulate than me.
