As I understand it, Liverpool have an enormous squad (ie 50+ players), if you include the young lads that their academy churns out. It's just that Benitez doesnt ever let them see the footballing light of day. Now he might have to.

Liverpool need to

1) get rid of 6 of their 23 registered foreign players
2) either use 5 academy players in their squad of 25 or buy "homegrown".
3) in the event of the above, 5 regular foreign squad members will need to be shipped out

They only have Gerrard, Carragher and Johnson. They need 8.
Does Insua count as home grown? How old was he when they signed him?

The already inflated value placed on english players just goes up another notch
True. But not just English. It's home grown... they can be any nationality, can't they?

Stevie Ireland = £10000000000000000000000000000

He signed on loan initially at 17 I think. If they accept him as a Liverpool player at that time he will count. If however they deem it to be when he signed fully with them (when he was 18 1/2), then it's too late.

Under the rules, clubs will have to name a squad of 25 players over 21 before the season begins. Eight of those players must be "home-grown", in that they must have been developed for at least three years by an English or Welsh club before their 21st birthday. They can name a second, limitless list of players under 21 and both lists can be resubmitted at the end of the January transfer window.

So by that criteria I presume the below would be accurate for the current squad with the players in rag being the non homegrown contingent ?

  1. Given
  2. Hart
  3. Lescott
  4. Sylvinho
  5. Bridge
  6. Garrido
  7. Logan
  8. Onuoha
  9. Richards
  10. Touré
  11. Zabaletta
  12. Barry
  13. De Jong
  14. Etuhu
  15. Ireland
  16. Johnson
  17. Kompany
  18. Petrov
  19. SWP
  20. Adebayor
  21. Bellamy
  22. Benjani
  23. Robinho
  24. Santa clause
  25. Tevez

Ireland edited for accuracy
