I think Hughes 'bought British' because this has been on the horizon. Perhaps it was widely known in football circles- I can't imagine that this decision has been taken overnight.

I would agree but i think more would have been done thos summer by different teams such as the scousers and chelsea who could be in the shit

Chelsea: Sturridge (Not the reason, but he was stilll b, Turnbull (makes much more sense now)
Liverpool: Johnsonrought in) for £18M (Rafa loves Spanish players, surely he would have bought Spanish?)

I think they both did tbh, especially seeing as they both only just meet the quota.

Well done Hughes for buying the players he did! We'd be fucked now if we still had Sven. Bianchi, Petrov, Geovanni, Elano, Bojinov, Benjani, Caicedo, Corluka, Garrido and Fernandes, were his 10 City signings. None would have counted! NONE! Hughes has brought in predominantly British, premier league experienced players, and this puts us in good shape to cope with the new ruling.

I'm sure we would have foreseen changes to the rules and acted accordingly.

As it is, only 3 of our summer signings qualify as home grown as far as I can work out.
whereas none of Sven's would
and let's not forget his two in January as well

There was no talk of changes to the rules being imminent.

Remember the clubs have apparently agreed to the rule change, do you not think we would have planned accordingly because of that?

It will be interesting to see how clubs deal with African players, the loss of two might not hurt us so bad but a club with 3 or 4, plus a few injuries and suspensions, and with only the option to call up kids might start to look at the makeup of their own squads.

and isn't that what the poster was suggesting, that it was imminent and Hughes acted accordingly

I'm not just talking about this summer though. I'm talking about Hughes' reign overall. Bridge, Bellamy, SWP, Lescott, Barry and Taylor. That's a good core of "home-grown" players all brought in by Hughes.

I'm just not sure what it had to do with Sven and his buys then.

I suspect it has much more to do with getting the players he wants, than getting players that fit this criteria to be honest.

As we can see here, we've plenty of flexibility to fit into these rules.

Yep - it raises issues on a number of levels.

As well as clubs having to pay a premium for homegrown players, said players will also be in a better bargaining position when it comes to contract talks. Onuoha for instance.
