Summer Transfers

I think my view was that at a minimum we needed those 4. I'm always for more. :)

That said I get your position on Goalkeeper. I was just saying if we didn't buy one we could always go that route.

I'm not as big on the DM need though. I think we need a concentration of players that can breakdown the opposition not defensive watercarriers. That's what Bakayoko, Fabihno etc are in my eyes.

We'll need that guys in 6 games all season. 3 times on the road in the Prem and 3 times on the road to top European teams at the most. Funny enough, I'd rather just have Dihno or OTamendi play that role in those games. While we stack up on players of Isco, Silva, Gundogan, Debryune and Dahoud type technical capabilities. Not to mention Garcia who I believe is about ready for prime time.

CB depends on Komps, no?

I mean, why can't it be both?

Pep's game is very reliant on creativity from the fullbacks allowing the midfielders to get into goal scoring opportunities. Because Sagna and Clichy were unable to offer the necessary attacking threat required, Yaya, Sane and even Aguero had to work harder to create opportunities for themselves.

Our first priority will be fullbacks this summer, Pep has said as much, and it was plain to see last night.

(and if, as you say, we aren't creative enough to beat Stoke because KDB, Yaya and Sane aren't enough in the midfield, then that only reinforces the point that more creativity is required elsewhere on the park)
Yep I agree it was both. Sagna/Clichy turgid technical skill played a role in our slow turgid buildup. If those 2 were Semedo and Bernat, it would have been a totally different ballgame.

Our first target should be another winger IMO.

We desperately, desperately need someone capable of coming in for Sterling or Sané and carrying a similar threat. if it's Roberts, that'd brilliant, but if he's not good enough then we need someone quickly.
Hence my Mbappe Adams Traore diatribe.

Yep, replacing Silva is a priority.. fuckinell.
Easy Pablo. While inarticulately put, I think he was simply trying to say Alli would be his ideal Silva successor. :p

I think he is absolutely wrong, and Alli is a goalscoring mid who wouldn't bring cohesion like Silva does. The Danishkid would have been a better choice from Tottenham. But Isco or Silva would be better than either.

My squad for next season:

Caballero no/yes
Bravo no/ yes
Gunn yes

Sidibé no
Maffeo yes

Bonucci No
Stones Yes
Kolarov Yes
Kompany yes

Grimaldo Yes
Henrichs Yes

Fernandinho Yes
Mooy No
García Yes

Silva. Yes
De Bruyne Yes
Gundogan Yes
Isco. Yes

Sané Yes
Nolito Yes

Sterling Yes
Roberts No

Aguero Yes
Jesus Yes
Iheanacho No

A 25-man squad, 3 back from loan, 5 new signings, 6HG.
Like 19 0f those :(

Ederson
Bravo
Gunn

Grimaldo
Maffeo
Henrichs

Kompany
Kolarov
Stones
Otamendi

Garcia
Fernandinho
Fernando
Mooy

Gundogan
Silva
De Bruyne
Isco
Oxlaide-Chamberlain

Sane
Sterling
Roberts

Jesus
Aguero

That's what I see as maybe a realistic squad, as Guardiola said there won't be too many incomings, that's 5 being signed with Roberts, Mooy and Maffeo all returning from loan. I see Kelechi, Tosin and Delph all being loaned out, the first 2 with the view of regular first team football and Delph with a view to sell. As outside chances of being signed/ becoming part of the first team: possibly Gibson from Middlesbrough (not seen anything of him really so I don't know, guess i'll see on Sat), Belotti as something different to the current forwards with Hart as a make-weight (big risk) and maybe Smith-Brown becoming a back-up (a big step up from the Dutch second division but he is versatile and hg and it saves on a lot of money and gives the youth a chance)

Would be rather good if Pep could persuade Philip Lahm to spend a season or two with us instead of retiring. He's still absolute quality and it's a shame for football in general he's stopping playing so soon. He's still better than about 90% of the world's full backs at 33!

If lahm comes he might as well bring Alonso with him. Isn't it great that these players can bow out at the top. If these two were here they could fill in until Sancho Foden Unal Diaz Roberts etc were integrated into the 1st team

The more I think about it, the more this summer's transfer window strikes me as critical like none other.

We are having our first major squad refresh, with accompanying exoduses, since before the Mancini era. But beyond that, last summer saw a number of key missed targets that ultimately left us short this year. The obvious examples of that are Laporte and Bonucci, both who pulled out of deals at the 11th hour. On top of that, it seems likely to me we were also banking on a number of other signings (Aubameyang and Kroos, both of whom would have been too expensive at the time) and ended up with comparitively very little in terms of solid additions for present and future (Sane, Stones and Gundogan being the three)

It's obvious what needs prioritising, Pep has said as much, but the urgency means that unlike many in the media I don't believe City are going to arse around with low-ball candidates or gamble on reclamation projects and/or injury risks. We have Pep and he's already endured a year with a squad largely unfit for his desires. With that in mind, I think people should revise their expectations and look to world class options in every category.

IMHO, we should be looking at;
Moraes
One of Bernat/Grimaldo
Laporte/Van Dijk
One of Fabinho/Heinrichs
One of Weigl/Isco
Bench striker (Llorente etc)

Obviously the most important thing is defense, but a long term replacement for David Silva is crucial and I'd argue the same for Yaya too. Weigl would be a difficult get, but Isco is likely and would be ideal.

Which included us signing Llorente, so you'll forgive me for not taking it seriously.

Oh, then maybe you want to respond to that inclusion (which actually was the only one listed as an example, not an expectation) and actually discuss why you don't like it, rather than trolling the thread with useless driveby comments?

I'm not qualified to know who we should sign and I'm not a 15 year old kid who thinks football manager gives him the answers. I'll leave it to Pep and Txiki and not worry about it being "the most important window ever".

Your comment simply amused me and I passed comment on it. Surely you didn't expect everyone to love what you wrote? It's a forum, that will happen to you.

Ah, so it was just a useless post that doesn't add to the discussion here. Cool.

I think last summer was a pretty major refresh, I am not sure what other additions we were banking on other than Laporte, Bonucci appeared an opportunistic alternative, I doubt our plan was to sign three new centre backs.
You list three major signings but I think Bravo was certainly intended as one, unfortunatley he has not really worked out. In addition Gabriel Jesus was agreed in the summer. Five major players for a team of eleven players with a squad player in Nolito and possible future players of Moreno and Zinchenko is a pretty major refresh and I doubt we will see a bigger one over the next few years.
Of course we need a bit more quality in at full back and possibly one or two other positions but I don't think next summer will be bigger or more important.

Ins: Fabinho, Rose, Laporte, Ox.
Outs: Clichy, Zaba, Navas
Extension: Yaya

GK: Bravo, Caballero
DF: Fabinho, Sagna, Stones, Otamendi, Kompany, Laporte, Kolarov, Rose
MF: Yaya, Gundogan, Fernandinho, Fernando, Delph
AM: Sterling, Ox, KDB, Silva, Nolito, Sane
ST: Aguero, Jesus, Inheacho

I've probably missed someone but that looks strong to me.

I mean, that doesn't really disagree with what I've suggested.

Even if you count Jesus, that's not a major squad refresh when you've still got six or more starting outfield players who were there when we won the league under Mancini. No other top six club has this issue.

Further, the fact that Bravo hasn't worked out and Zinchenko/Moreno are playing poorly for their loan clubs, and thus years away from City first team, are only further evidence of the importance of making big signings this summer.
