The Album Review Club - Week #139 - (page 1815) - Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds

While I would normally quite like this type of bluesy-rocky mix album, there was a certain muted and supressed feel here that I couldn't quite get my head around.

I see the comparisons with JJ Cale, but that had a specific mood that was quite comfortable, with this it just didn't click for me, and I found a lot of it a bit flat.

Certain songs I quite liked, like Oh Atlanta or Spanish Moon, that had a bit more energy. The solo stretches on the Fan are good too, beyond the beginning and ending.

The rest, I felt a bit lost with what it actually wanted to be. Hate to be harsh to a first nomination, but I feel a 5 is fair to other albums and what I got out of them, sorry.

Gave this weeks offering a first listen on Monday and was pleasantly surprised...again by yet another new band for me.
Going to give it a couple more listens today before review but certainly enjoyed it.

6/10 for me. Quite enjoyed the Zappary feel but where Zappa ticks the box for me with the off piste stuff, I felt this got a bit lost sometimes - the keyboard/piano on The Fan being a prime example.
Enjoyed the guitar work and the slide in particular which seems to be a recurring theme in recent picks. Standout tracks for me were those that didn’t have the plinky piano!
Will explore some of their other stuff - nice pick

Rock & Roll Doctor....Gold Ole boys, flares, big moustaches and long hair, yet a hint of reggae. Good opener
Oh Atlanta....Yes, got the Quo likeness and that lovely piano coming through that so many seem to have a problem with!
Skin It Back..Funky with a hint of a Blaxploitation soundtrack
Down The Road....More country and that pesky piano coming through
Spanish Moon....Funky and sure I have heard this in a porn film ...sorry ...a friend reckoned it sounded like that
Feat Dont Fail Me Now....Good times , upbeat and one of my faves
The Fan......Felt like the only filler on an otherwise very good album
Cold/Triple/Medley...Great ending

As said, yet another new one on me and very enjoyable. I think one that I will listen to again and go for some of their other stuff. Funny how I just didnt get Pearl Jam yet seemed to warm to this from almost the first bars.
So an overall 7.5 from me as just marginal in beign better than last weeks.
And once again thank you for introducing me to something new.

At first listen I thought this would be similar to the JJ Cale nomination, however enjoyable as this was it’s not quite at the same level for me. Broadly speaking I like the eclectic mix of styles they combine but it’s a double edged sword because it’s hard to make an eclectic sound also seem coherent and in this case, though it made individual songs enjoyable, I think it worked against the album as a whole.

I thought the middle of the album was the strongest. Skin It Back, Spanish Moon and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now are all songs I would happily listen to on a regular basis. I quite like The Fan but though it starts interesting, I’m not sure it then goes anywhere. It’s not that I didn’t like the other tracks it’s just that bundled together it didn’t feel that compelling.

Given it had a similar(ish) vibe to the very popular JJ Cale nomination I’ve tried to work out why it didn’t speak to me as much as that did. I think it’s that, despite the variety on display on the Cale album, the songs are unified by a sense of space in the playing and the production which, along with Cale’s distinctive vocals, gave it a coherence that I felt this lacked. I did wonder whether the shared vocal duties on this album made it harder to get as a whole but I don't think that was particularly the case. The final medley summed up the issue for me, some very enjoyable playing but I wasn’t sure where it was going in totality.

Though it was missing something for me overall, it was a good nomination and I did enjoy it. A solid 6.5/10.

FEATS DON’T FAIL ME NOW

Southern boogie or Country with a Southern beat, LF have a style all their own and I make no excuses,I love it.
Dixie Chicken was going to be my next pick , but this album is nearly as good.
I love LGs voice and guitar playing, he was a session musician and played along with other members of LF on the early Robert Palmer albums which I thought were great.Bill Paynes honky tonk piano playing , a really great funky rhythm section plus The TOP horns on Spanish Moon just make a great sound.LF are one of those bands that have a really distinctive sound which IMHO hasn’t dated at all.
Every track on this album is good and some like ‘Rock n Roll Doctor,Spanish Moon Skin it back ‘and the title are just great.
Like OB1 it was a big regret I never got to see them live, and a massive shame we lost LG at age 34.

Great first pick Stoneblue

9/10
