The Boxing thread

Let's not go OTT with the criticism of Joshua.
He deservedly lost the fight and temporarily his marbles but he's not finished as a fighter.
He's got a large UK following and a slick promotional team and media network behind him.
I can see him fighting a succession of hand picked opponents with plenty of WWE style beef generated to help fill up arenas and football stadia. He may even get his hands around one of the world titles that the true World #1 doesn't care to defend.
He's no longer in the argument to be the best but very likely to be a Chris Eubank Sr huge draw.

I’ll never understand the idea that a boxer needs to retire after he’s lost a few fights.

I agree with this premise but I can understand why the questions are being asked.

AJ is in a similar position to McGregor in that they’re both superstars, both former champions and have both been in the biggest fights.

When you’re set for life financially and comprehensively lose multiple fights to a person who is arguably not even the best in the division, then I suppose the question becomes more of a ‘why carry on fighting’ as opposed to ‘they cannot fight anymore’.

The sad thing is that it’s boxings own self interest, something which AJ has been part of, which has led him to this point in his career.

There’s a certain irony that in AJs four fights against Ruiz and Usyk, this one was his best performance by a country mile, yet it is the one which leaves him the furthest away from a title shot.

I thought AJ did great. He just came up against an unbelievably good boxer. The monologue at the end was cringey but it’s all entertainment.

Oh and no one who has ever entered a ring for a pro fight is a shithouse.
It takes guts, huge guts
I fought numerous times with my local boxing club around the country. I can safely say it's the toughest sport I've ever done by far. The training and work that goes into it on top of getting in the ring. I can only imagine how difficult it is at that level! The truth of it is you go into the ring at that level and might not come out the same person. They both went home to their loved ones and that's all that matters at the end of the day. I still go training every Saturday with my son he absolutely loves it not something I really want him doing but he's in love with it.

AJ for me does not feel hurt enough to be a world champion,
you have to put your body on the line and even cross it and go to the well, you have to want it so bad that losing is not an option.

AJ is finished for me after tonight, and should walk away with a nice slice of pie and become a celebrity.
The hunger was not there, the technic not there, the dirty stuff was not there, we are talking about facing a boxer Usyk that is not even a heavy weight, and you lose twice to him, come on please you don't learn after the first fight

first thing you do is use your weight advantage, get hold of him tie him up stop him and make him push you away
having to carry a heavy lump of a boxer for 12 rounds takes some doing, also the dirty stuff with elbows and head and ropes and holding

Joshua definitely isn't "shit".

He's in a really difficult situation because he's constantly in the limelight, The media, pundits and public constantly on his case so it certainly can't be easy. The media especially have bigged him up from an early age so massive pressure on him to perform.

Frazer Clarke (who spoke really well btw) said the same in the studio afterwards.

He compared the pressure himself and Laurence Okolie have on them to Joshua and said it was unbelievably different because of who Joshua is and the way the media follow his every move and how the world judges him....

BUT... That's why Joshua is paid the big bucks and that's what he's had all the media training for. He knows what comes with the multimillion pound Hollywood fights.
