I think the King’s letter and his offer of a second state visit is the thing that’s swayed it.
We should all be grateful to His Majesty for that.
Beat me to itSwayed what?
Some cannot accept Labour doing well it appearsSwayed what? We should be grateful to the both of them, regardless of political persuasion or whether someone’s a royalist or not.
More lip service..The French agree to start turning round boats in the Channel - bloody Labour getting in office and doing things

Some cannot accept Labour doing well it appears
I think all sides should be looking at this and hoping for a successful visit. I know the three I was listening to on the radio are and praised Starmer for how he was handling the situation. Some cannot accept Labour doing well it appears
Do you think Khan will be flying the Trump baby blimp over Parliament square this time ? Or will he dump his principles as readily as Starmer and Lammy ?Some cannot accept Labour doing well it appears
All their principles will end up in the same bin.Do you think Khan will be flying the Trump baby blimp over Parliament square this time ? Or will he dump his principles as readily as Starmer and Lammy ?
I'm not sure why if you believe the world will not save the planet as is for its own benefit that we should therefore save ourselves from trying.Just as a diversion from PM Starmer’s visit to Trump World…I’m no fan of Starmer, but I do care for my Country and hope he does well.
The commitment to net zero by 2050 and decarbonising energy by 2030 will kill this Government. Even though it was Theresa May’s folly, Labour now have the “ tar baby” - although Ed M has always been a zealot for windmills etc.
Setting aside the politics, as both main parties are complicit (I ignore the Lib Dems as a serious political force beyond local Government) the big question is
why the fuck should we, contributing less than 0.9% of global emissions, feel the need, or compulsion, to be global “leaders” on climate change.
The Chinese, Indians and others are still commissioning coal fired generation and in the case of the Chinese, using their comparative advantage of cheap power to make solar panels and stuff and flog them to UK and Germany etc. a) making handsome profits and b) ensuring we continue to drive our energy costs ever higher - and our industry (such as we have left, but perhaps not for much longer) ) ever more uncompetitive. Our fellow travellers in this lunacy are Germany - but watch this space - they will shortly decide to recommission their large and efficient fleet of nuclear power stations that Merkel stupidly closed. That will leave us, standing bravely alone, a decade or two from any new nuclear, the existing plants closing, dependant on stochastic sources of power generation and foreign inter-connectors. We are happily heading for economic oblivion and plummeting living standards. Well done everyone.
It is sheer lunacy - not a hope in hell that the Governments of the world will ever unite and save the planet. Every single Government that matters will follow their own interests. That is why only, by way of example, it is Companies like the now-hatedMusk’s Tesla, SpaceX and Starlink that have shown only capitalism will generate the innovation and technology to even mitigate climate change. To me, this is our only realistic hope.
Politicians can’t/won’t do it, Institutions can’t/won’t do it. One World government is never going to happen either. Unfortunately dog will eat dog. We need a total rethink, but I’m not sure our politicians are capable of changing direction, as nobody likes to admit they’ve fucked up.
It’s going to get messy.
Heard on the radio that Starmer couldn’t have had a better start with Trump, even got him to confirm a US backstop in the form of American workers in Ukraine.
Nice start, Trump seems to love anything ‘Old Blighty’.
Starmer is a pragmatic politician. That means he is not wedded to principle but follows realpolitik.
If you wanted a leader with principles, you should have voted for Corbyn. You may have thought his principles stank, but he had them. I think it's at least arguable that the last PM with principles was Edward Heath. Again, you may have thought his principles stank, but he had them.
What a world doff capping to a bully.
Thatcher at least believed in the rule of law, which puts her above all current righties.Thatcher had principles. You may have thought they stank.
That's different from him wanting some sort of US presence there to defend the sovereignity of Ukraine or its territorial integrity which was the foreign policy approach of Biden/the Democrats and is of the EU and UK. There's no sign he gives even the slighest more of a shit about that than he has done.Trump actually stated that the US in Ukraine would be a sort of backstop as nobody would dare to try anything against US citizens.
The logical conclusion of this is that if Trump, despite this visit, still fundamentally presses ahead with stopping funding for Ukraine, then Starmer will simply accept that and everyone praising him today will have been praising him for achieving what exactly?Starmer is a pragmatic politician. That means he is not wedded to principle but follows realpolitik.

Tell Mango Mussolini he can buy them for a trillion dollars. That's should cover the black hole and some real investment in public services.Whatever anyone thinks of Trump he is the president and I think Starmer did very well. The letter from the palace was a very clever move - and people reckon the royal family bring no value to this country eh?!??!!!
