The Labour Government

Fair points about "cash in hand" working, though that is rife across the board.

My point probably badly made is that Daily Mirror readers are far more likely to moan about ID cards (which I'd readily support) than those of the Daily Mail.

I could see the arguments against when it was proposed about 20 years ago ( but didn't agree myself - no issues with id cards ) but 20 years on its a new landscape. Similarly I laugh at the conspiracy theorists who invent a cash less society in their heads. Facts are we all carry cards we all have mobiles so you have the means of id on you already and your whereabouts are monitored too. As things progress such a card could be really handy. Imagine id - medical records - driving records and so on all on one card. Pulled over by the Police? Show them your card - your right to drive and insurance details can be scanned easily. Taken ill in the street? The paramedics scan your card and find any pre-existing co-morbidities and medicines you are on to help with treatment.

Yet the numbers keep rising and rising and rising……

Cooper just this week is now asking for a crackdown on those working in the black economy as a government report suggests anywhere between 800k and 1.2 Million illegal immigrants are here working in it.
What government report is this?

Probably one of the hundreds they have commissioned.....

These days you can quite literally get a bespoke report to tell you exactly what you want it to, to support the visions you want people to believe and this applies to all sides of the political arguments.
So you don't know either.

I fail to see the point of your amendment, old chap.

The people who whine most about immigrants and 'scroungers' are overwhelmingly concentrated on the Daily Mail site, far fewer on that of the Daily Mirror.

The exact same people are paranoid about any restriction on cash and the introduction of ID cards!

As I have said before, it's no use willing the ends unless you also will the means. That's just fantasy pipe-dreaming, the equivalent of hoping the Lottery comes up so you can have a new car.
Considering Google/Amazon etc know when we fart and try sell us products for it. I don't understand why people kick off about ID cards.

That's closer to reality than calling me a Marxist! Actually, my starting point would be "Do to others as you would have them do to you". Not that I always adhere to that; I'd have to give my season ticket away for every game. But it is a basis for a welfare state. And it does mean I don't always support the party line. At the last constituency Labour party meeting I gave a little speech with loads of quotes as to why cutting overseas aid was bad - all from the debate in Parliament when the Tories cut it from 0.7% of domestic income to 0.5%, and all from Keir Starmer.
Err, lets just have a look...

I now see why the state owning the means of production is such a better alternative.
Listen kid, until the workers take control of the means of production,
Most people create wealth - the problem is that they create it for other people (those who own the means of production)
Sound familiar Vic ? If it sounds Marxist , then it probably is ..... No?
Anyway, nothing to be ashamed of , as a young man I was one myself !
I note your activism from your post above, well done on that ( even though I wouldn't agree with you ) that should be applauded.

The world’s changed.

What I find most disturbing about tech these days is how it listens in to whatever we are saying, promoting stuff the next time we switch it on.

Labour has delivered the highest return migration rates for eight years, and the four biggest return flights ever.
So it turns out Starmers claim of returning 24,000 migrants isn't quite what it seems , only 6,339 were removed forcibly , the rest went back of their own accord! Probably as a result of Rachel Reeves' budget I should imagine . Ffs even the illegals can see the country is going down the pan and want out !

Gosh, even wrenched out of context, are those quotes the best you've got?

The appropriation of land is the real problem.

"In that original state of things, which precedes both the appropriation of land and the accumulation of stock, the whole produce of labour belongs to the labourer. He has neither landlord nor master to share with him. Had this state continued, the wages of labour would have augmented with all those improvements in its productive powers to which the division of labour gives occasion."

I know lefties love to quote this bit of Adam Smith, usually after they’ve been accused of being a Marxist. Or indeed to try to trick people into thinking it is actually a quote from Marx.

But I’m always surprised they don’t make more use of his quote that for there to be one very rich man, there must be at least 500 poor. That said, I’ve never really understood lefties.

Conservatives and righties are too emotional to understand things. Not sure if it’s an insecurity thing, but reasoning with a Conservative/rightie is like reasoning with a toddler.

That said, I’ve never really understood lefties.

It's quite simple, their corpus callosum tends to be larger; the hypothesis being it facilitates greater communication between the left and right hemispheres which is necessary to cope with the swapping of some brain functions across the hemispheres when compared to 'righties'.

So instead of imposing retaliatory tariffs on US goods we are negotiating by removing the very small digital services tax brought in 5 years ago.

"Chancellor Rachel Reeves has suggested the UK could change its taxes on big tech firms as part of a deal to avoid US tariffs.

The digital services tax, introduced in 2020, imposes a 2% levy on tech firms, including big US firms such as Amazon, bringing in about £800m in tax per year"

Who are these genius's we have negotiating these deals.with the US. Laurel and Hardy.
