The Labour Government

Is it me or have Labour brought some statesmanship back to our politics?

Quite enjoying this way of governing, almost as if it was always supposed to be like this.

Yeah but to be fair we are 2 days in, and they’ve known they’re going to be in power for at least a year.

If they didn’t have some solid, easy win policies and announcements to make as soon as they got in then we’d be in a lot of trouble.

The fact that they did shows how much serious prep went into that GE - the other lot were announcing it in the rain - fighting amongst and briefing against each other, saying they had a plan without saying what the plan was, saying Labour didn't have a plan when they really did and were gradually revealing it in the campaign shows that had they won we would be fucked.

I mean even afterwards Braverman is having a meltdown and Steve Baker who refused to cancel his holiday to campaign was - just before the GE - saying he was considering running for leader ............ and then had his own meltdown

Total chaos. In keeping with the way they governed.

Starmer has started OKish, his cabinet has no real surprises (Streeting scares me to fuck though), the messaging appears co-ordinated, but it is not really that inspiring. It is like watching England, it is a bit dull and Starmer is Southgate. Like Southgate though he has a chance of glory, my thoughts are does he have the courage to grasp that glory and really enact change, is Reeves really a radical CotE, Cooper had very little to say today that will impress anyone who has valid concerns about immigration, Lammy's notion of progressive realism as Foreign Sec is interesting and he has an impressive contact book, i can envisage him becoming increasing powerful in the Govt.
The RW nutjob attacks on Angela Rayner have been interesting, surprisingly a lot of right wing men are experts on women's fashion. They do not attack her views they attack her as a person, pretty sad that really. I would love her as PM.

One of the most delightful outcomes of the election is that there are now more MP's from Parrs Wood high school in the cabinet than people from Eton :))

Starmer has a lot of work to do, he become PM with a dreadful approval rating, possibly the worst in history, the party got less votes than under Corbyn. Politics needs fixing, we need to get back to trust in our MP's and our Parliament and if any Labour MP does something wrong they need booting out ASAP not protected like Johnson tried with his mates.

My stance on Starmer is well documented on here, but I do wish him well, I do hope we see a bit of the Socialist he claims to be, I do hope his cabinet make our country a better place because by fuck after 14 years of being run by selfish cunts we need it.

I’m not even talking about policies, just the manner in which they are conducting themselves.

A breath of fresh air.

Ancient history that was dealt with 15 years ago and was discussed on here yesterday. She paid back the tenner that was claimed for the porno that was on an itemised bill, and the investigation failed to establish whether her using her sister’s flat as her primary address cost the taxpayer more than if she had used her constituency address as her main residence and rented/bought a second home near Westminster. In the scheme of things it was fairly small and she resigned at the time unlike the myriad of Tories who profited by millions with dodgy Covid contracts.

I never really had you down as someone who was quite so partisan. Thought you were a more balanced poster than that.

Ah well.

Hopefully you’ll be happily surprised at what he achieves. By God, we deserve it after what has just gone.

Good post mate apart from the socialist thing ya lefty tosser ;)

Anyroad any whiff of criticism and you’ll be on some ignore lists. Kaz is already taking names.

Thing with it is and its the reason why he has brought people into the fold from outside by means of the Lords is that you need Political people with Political experience.

Johnson purged his Party of all people like that favouring people who were loyal to him and Brexit. And that was their biggest issue - a lot of Junior then later full Ministerial roles went to the 2019 intake who were loyal but inexperienced and as thick as mince.

With the number of new MP's for Labour Starmer is rightfully avoiding the same mistake and isn't taking "getting elected" as full confirmation that you are Politically adept

If this was a Tory Home Sec or PM then Cooper would be in hi-viz wearing a stab vest for full photo - op emphasis

Being reported that the renationalisation of the rail companies will be announced in the King's Speech. I assume this means that contracts won't be renewed when they expire.

Water companies next, please.
My understanding is that as the Train Operating Companies' contracts come to an end different parts of the railway will be brought back into public ownership. This will take about four years.

What will be interesting to see is whether any compensation will be paid out. If so, this has the potential to slow down or even prevent other public utilities being brought back into public ownership.

However it's done it's likely that the same people will be running the same locos and rolling stock for e.g., but will be directly accountable to the government rather that some shadowy shareholders who are quick to take the dividends but slow to invest.

I welcome the likes of Timpson being involved.

If they're any good or the best people at running them, and don't have to listen to people wanting money, I'm not too bothered if it's the same people.

What needs to be put into place is much ticket price simplification and not ever increasing costs (get rid of the concept of protected and unprotected fares that have been abused by operators), and decent services where they've been allowed to decay.

An added benefit of this policy, is that those jailed for corruption can have assets recovered under POCA which can be redesigned as HMO's and reducing the housing shortage greatly.

We need to make politicians fearful if they are even considering being corrupt, same for the parasites who make money with government protection.

The pound will be interesting to watch the week.
If it breaks above 1.286 by Thursday then it’ll confirm its bullish trajectory. Certainly for this short/mid-term.
I think it lost a little ground today against the Euro which I suspect is due to progress being made in France, but I agree - if it gains a full cent within a week against the dollar that will be very encouraging
