Few bob saved? Yesterday 500 poor soils came in on boats. Let’s say £200 per day to look after them 200 x 500 == £100,000 per day at least that’s quite a few pensioners winter allowance to help them keep warm! After all most of them have paid into the system for up to 50 years?



Thanks in advance to the guys who say we are not talking/ thinking of this on this tread! We should be?

What are you basing this £200 a day fugure on?

Sounds like you are just making it up.

If you think they are getting full board in four star hotels you are mistaken.

The average works out at about £112 a day.

Tbh they are bound to make mistakes, all politicians have big egos, which means they won't admit those mistakes. Economies grow when business grow and to grow a business you need to have confidence, and talking down the economy in the run up to the Autumn budget was damaging and naive. It's evident that they have now stopped doing this.

Ripping up the planning system on its own was never ever going to result in 300,000 houses being built each year. We haven't built that many for 50 years and as isn't the skilled trades to do the work as was pointed out this week. Nor the affordable money to let people buy the houses. So that one is just hot air. The demand will continue to increase and housing costs will just go up as immigration has been very high and increased under the last Government and is clearly not at sustainable levels.

It is early days but the Government needs to start looking at the wider linked issues as many problems the country faces are linked through cause and affect. We can only hope they will be able to grow the economy as all the required improvements rest on this.

Ok just thinking about all the other bits and pieces from our kind government as well, plus you still need staff in the hotel?

It's outsourced services.

The cost of accommodation includes staff, if food is supplied then the asylum seekers get a smaller allowance.

When food is included in their accommodation, Asylum seekers get an allowance of £8.86 a week rather than £49.18.

It's no longer a hotel when it becomes asylum seeker accommodation.

You are talking about taking all money away from people who have fled torture, violence and sexual violence and giving it to a group of privileged pensioners.

Does that not strike you as a bit sick?

Growth is an irrelevance. It would be better to see zero growth and actually tackle the numerous problems there are in society.

That's an emotional response. Read it again and calm down.

They are privileged in comparison to other pensioners and other people in the same income bracket.

If you aren't privileged put in a claim for pension credit. I hope you are successful if you apply.
 
The State Pension system needed a complete overhaul years ago. However, I completely understand those who have paid in all their lives, who have saved (and therefore lessened the burden on the State in the process) feeling "penalised" for doing so.
It's not just the State Pension either, there needs to be a fundamental change of mindset when it comes to support from the State generally. The State support should be there for genuine "need." Not as an added bonus for a particular situation.

It's all a horrendous mess, and it will take a very brave (possibly suicidal to be honest) Government to actually address it.

I wouldn't qualify as I'm a right privileged **** who worked hard and saved but I do know men and women who also don't qualify but who are skint too.

It's a pity you don't know people who fall through the so called safety net.
 
Some of the problems with this country:

1. Huge imbalance of wealth between the ultra-rich and the rest.
2. A great reluctance to tax wealth (as opposed to income) to change this.
3. A largely under-educated/trained workforce in an increasingly high-tech world.
4. An absurd tendency to nostalgic hankering for a supposed golden age that never was.
5. An extreme tendency to insularity.
6. A deeply corrupt and biased media.
7. Too much fawning to the USA in the mistaken belief they are our 'friends', not ruthless business competitors.
8. A lack of realism in the population, with a demand for European levels of services for USA levels of taxation.
9. Genuine poverty in a huge proportion of the population, not just pensioners.
10. An absurdly small internal market, thanks to Brexit.
11. Poor trading arrangements, with most of the 'deals' trumpeted by the Tories worthless or next to worthless.
12. A tendency to invest in property, not industry.

I am a pensioner who has lost it, not rich but tbh I am not dependent upon it, and never was.

The most in need should still get it imo, but there will be many others who simply will not miss it, and have rightly no longer get it.
