It would be the dream to see major projects come in on time and on budget however it will likely remain just that - a dream. Overrun in costs and time is not unique to the UK though. The new Berlin Airport started construction in 2006 and was due to open in 2011. It eventually opened in 2020.

Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to cost major projects or implement strong oversight, but in reality a budget is just an estimate designed to get a project started. It is rarely a realistic estimate of the actual cost or time involved. I sometimes think we would be better off accepting this fact rather than fretting over it :)

Major project overruns and over budgets are not even unique to governments.

I think a sum anywhere that big will backfire - a nominally pro-working man, pro-Britain party owned by one man (and currently with no member input) bankrolled by a South-African/American should be a large enough target to be hit.

I think there’s a huge danger in this view similar to the UK will never vote to leave the EU.
The more Labour appear to move to protecting corporate interests and shitting on the people who they claim to represent, the more likely the prospect of Farage becomes.
All reform need to do is to ‘get the vote out’ like they did with Brexit. If they’re being bankrolled by Musk and spewing out propaganda via X, we could be at another ‘why not give him a go’ moment.
Of course Musk might also offer ‘incentives’ to vote for Farage, as he did for Trump.
Farage can easily appeal to the working class, many of whom will, somehow, think he’ll have their interests at heart, by pointing at Starmer and the Tories and saying what have they ever done for you? He can now do the same to the pensioners and, if he goes deregulation happy, and he will, the city will love him (if only the working class would understand that if the city approve of a leader, the working class will get shafted).
I’m not saying it’s likely but the danger is believing it can’t happen.

There might be limits to the influence of the main stream media but the Wild West of social media algorithms is a completely different story, hence Brexit.

Stories of ‘illegals’ popping up on peoples timelines, mostly about crime, Sharia Law, taking up NHS resources, getting hundreds of pounds a month in benefits, circumventing the housing ladder, taking ‘our’ jobs and putting undue strain on education and pensioners dying of cold will be everywhere, and that’s just on Facebook.
‘X’ will be taking these already made up stories and embellishing them, having bots repost and like them and, without too much imagination, the whole country is even angrier than 2016. That is what Farage needs and, if Starmer doesn’t deliver tangible benefits, he might just get it…

As I mentioned in an earlier post, working class people thinking Johnson, Farage et al will have their backs, is beyond weird although it likely explains the distain for eduction of the masses held by many on the Conservative side of the country.

They also have a penchant for pointing ‘over there’ as an explanation for everything.

“Hey middle class people, it’s not our fault everything is broken, it’s the working class and the union Barons”.

“Privatise everything and it’ll be Nirvana”.

“Hey while working class boys, it’s not our fault the education system stinks and you’re hugely disadvantaged, it’s forinners”.

“Hey, everyone, if only we could take power back from the EU, everything would be great and we can pretend the Empire will make a comeback”.

Well, no. As the backlog clears, those whose asylum claims are refused will be deported, but those whose claims are granted will have to find somewhere else to live. The LABOUR government has just doubled the move-on period (from asylum accommodation) to 56 days to help avoid people granted asylum then being on the streets.
