I agree it shouldn't be a party political issue. But it's strange that the opposition are suddenly up in arms about it when they could have easily addressed this themselves at any point up to July 4th last year.
And an inquiry isn't about bringing the perpetrators to justice, it's about investigating what went wrong and making recommendations to ensure the same things aren't repeated. That's already happened, but the previous government decided to do nothing about it. This one is now trying to put those recommendations into place, with over 100 Conservative MPs voting to block it.
The whole thing is just utterly bizarre.

The referendum was a huge win for No, and I doubt any format would have got a different result.
Now of course, it might be very different. Reform are of course, fully in favour, so we'd be looking at a campaign which told people that Starmer would be thrown out of No10 the day after the referendum, and everyone would get a cheque for £1000 in the post.

Im yet to see a local MP significantly influence national policy decisions, particularly around the big ticket items that fundamentally affect peoples lives i.e. tax, education, health etc.
As Ive said before Reform and hard left Socialist Parties, should all be allowed a voice based upon share of the vote. By doing so it exposes them to critical debate rather than being in echo chambers where more extreme views take hold.
It's not hugely, but it's a 'difference', which is what the ranking in AV was. Neither are hugely complex, but they are more so than FPTP.
The main point was that the referendum was a 68:32 massacre, and all the big players would have been on the same sides, and you'd get the same result. Switching out one system that needed a bit of explanation, wasn't going to overturn that kind of result.
As we have/seem to be moving towards devolution with Mayor's there isn't any need for it to be complicated. Last time the two main parties and the media that supports them were against it. We don't need as many MPs or Lords.
It seems really baffling to me that people are happy with this system.

You would think a cabinet should reflect the coalition to some degree but that wouid be down to the negotiations between the coalition parties. There will soon be little need for such high numbers of MPs. Local elections should put in place a Mayor and local reps that actually spend their time helping their local community rather than buggering off to London. The Lords should be a specialist chamber rather than a dozing lounge for Sir Charles Chumley Warner.Just as a thought, would any replacement system need a plan for ministerial offices if there are less MPs? Or would it be a matter of everyone from a ruling coalition would have to have a ministerial job?

Apparently its now very controversial to say that this Labour Government is doing alright so far. Not spectacular, but they're exhibiting good and rational politics that are really obvious wins as well as setting up some longer term things.
