My wife has always argued New Labour or the Starmer version of it are worse than the Tories. At least there is no presence from the Tories that they are utter shitearses

Last Wednesday in the House of Commons almost the whole day was spent on this topic and the leader of the official opposition used her time at PMQ's to demand a fresh enquiry. It was in all the news - Did you miss it ?
It has been covered extensively in the media since with many prominent people calling for a fresh enquiry - You can look that up .
Additionally a You Gov poll says that 76% of voters support a new enquiry and despite the position of the government 65% of Labour voters support a fresh enquiry (
So no, its not just about what I think.


Give it up. That was 7 years ago, before the last inquiry reported - You miss the point. The point is that Sarah Champion supports a fresh National enquiry despite an enquiry already being done in her Rotherham constituency. She knows that the enquiry was inadequate and that more work need to be undertaken .

This derives from Oldham council's resolution to ask for a Public Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in the borough of Oldham.

This government said no, just as had the Tory government. The rest is sheer opportunism. Most people who know what they're talking about say the Telford inquiry is how a local inquiry should be run.

No one in government will ever please, will always be labelled as the 'worst ever' and a 'bunch of cunts' , left/right doesn't matter. It's media/social media driven to ensure we're all permanently outraged.

Labour have introduced some very good, measured proposals and working tirelessly to improve the NHS and public services - but no one gives a shit, it's to boring. people just want to be spoon fed anger.

To be fair it depends on the market, the products/services involved and the time duration.

What you tend to find in sectors where the margins are small, you will either see a rise across the whole sector or some that hold back the rise and undercut to deliberately bring in new customers but then raise their prices later. Short term yes there may be a movement of customers but in the medium term prices will inevitably settle at a higher price point.

Where margins are much higher and they are independent of pressure from shareholders, then yes they may absorb some or all of the cost.

Therein lies the problem, shareholders have little interest in the UK or its problems and will always chase whoever gives the best return against risk.
Bottom line is the world is run by private equity with little to no morality and short of a revolution its not gonna change.

Good post. Like so many political issues you cannot be good, only 'less bad' in the eyes of the public! Labour are certainly not left wing and come across as centre which I think is fair enough but obviously disappointing for those hoping for change. They also have tried to face up to tough problems and come up with what looks like sensible fiscal rules albeit with the comfort blanket of blaming all the country's ills on the Tories. The downside is they do not seem to have fared any better than the Tories so much of what they say comes across as nice meaning bluster. They need a lot of luck with a world economy upturn.

Pension funds invest in stocks often for the dividend. If those companies suffer then the dividend suffers and your pension suffers, they might then invest elsewhere. Either way, you have a direct interest in obtaining the best return too.

If the government decided to impose a punitive system that is against shareholders then would you be happy to accept less money in retirement? I'd guess not, so why should we be in favour of such a thing?

Yes there is: the income tax system. Compare Scandinavia with elsewhere. They have higher taxes and less gap between the rich and the rest. Anybody would think we have never had a labour gov., given that our inequality grows all the time. Our biggest failing is overtaxing the least well off.

Why did they pay Nurses and stop the strikes in the health sector ? why did they pay Train unions and stop the strikes? why have they changed workers rights bill in favor of equality, fair pay for workers? why are they bringing in renters bill to help the lowest who face eviction ? why are they putting the biggest tax burdens on corporations and businesses? why have they raised the minimum wage for the poorest ? why have they retained the triple lock for 13m pensioners ? why are they funding 8 billion for the development of green technologies and a number of clean energy projects? why have they allocated 12 billion for infected blood compensation ? why have they created cross departmental child poverty taskforce? why they bringing in free breakfast clubs for schools ?

They haven’t paid the nurses. The nurses rejected the pay award from last year (although they still get it) and this years offering is derisory.

They did give the JDs a big uplift - presume you mean them??
