The Labour Government

He has urgently got to find money. Would you rather he increased taxes?
Yes, on the super wealthy, people that avoid taxation (nod to sir Jim) and Organisations that don't pay their fair share of UK taxes.

Mind you cutting the foreign aid budget is equally fair. Why are we paying copius amounts to India, China and other countries that could fend for themselves.

For a war in another country, how about looking after the elderly at home first. You will be a foc one day let’s see if your views change then
So, are you saying we should leave NATO incase we have to fight an enemy in another Country?

I'm a FoC now and lost my winter fuel payment but I support any Government raising extra revenue from wherever to increase defnce spending, and so should everybody

Agree on both counts but the expediency needed, raising personal income tax would be neccesary I presume

Sorry if my point wasn't clear enough.

The reason that prices are going up is because the price companies buy energy has gone up. That's out of Labour's control, and that's what they've said they want to change.

The "lie" was that they said they would change the system so that we get more of our power from electricity that is produced in the UK, without relying as much on overseas gas. That clearly isn't some kind of switch you flick, or something that changes overnight with a stroke of a pen, hence the commitment to do it by the end of this Parliament. You can judge them on how successful they are at the next election, but it's pointless saying after a few months that it's not happened.

They didn't say that they would reduce prices immediately, so the stuff about a "lie" is the bullshit, and Stephen Flynn is well aware of that.
The problem is how energy and in particular electricity is charged. Setting the price by the cost of the most expensive marginal generator means that even if we achieve 99% renewable energy and only 1% from gas. The 1% sets the market rate which is just ridiculous.

I’d argue we do both, the WFA is still there for those that really need it and the state pension is going up by 4.1% too.

The implementation of it has been horrendous but I’m not sure as a policy in general why people have an issue with it. My parents are both pensioners and absolutely shouldn’t be getting the WFA.

If we don't head off the Russian threat once and for all, there's a good chance that nobody will get to be a FOC.

You sound like a Tory/Reformer.

The elderly people that are really needing it are the very people who are not getting it!

There were other more practical ways of managing the WFA withdrawal. For example, why not for starters just withdraw it from pensioners who are/were in the higher tax bracket? For starters like?

No, this Labour government is about as incompetent a government that I have witnessed in my 63 years on this planet. Just so long as the Rt Hon. and Honourable members can continue getting their second homes allowances and all that goes with it... you know fuel allowances, travel expenses, etc.... and all the other "benefits" of being a 91K a year public servant.

Why aren’t they getting it aside from not applying for it? That’s what I mean when I said the implementation was horrendous.

Many of the older generation are not capable or computer savvy enough and/or just cannot be arsed to engage with the government for making a claim which would mean working through many pages of not easy to complete forms.

All they needed to do was to run a programme to ID the people in the higher tax bracket and stop the payments. In this day and age I would venture that, that was something that could be developed by a "wet behind the ears" intern.

Superb speech, well done Starmer.
Really ?
One word Trump ! or two Trump and Vance !
So just before he heads off to meet Trump he manages to ...
Write a letter to his cabinet telling them they had to "stop looking down on people who are worried about immigration" and it is not racist to express these concerns and all immigration in ' not an untrammelled good" amongst other similar messages. This letter is conveniently leaked.
Now today with much fanfare he increases Defence spending at the expense of the Foreign aid budget.
A coincidence - I think not.
He knows he is going to bent over that oval office desk , this is a plea for some lube ! He would go into the Oval Office in a MAGA hat if he thought he would be able to keep his trousers up !
So .. if you agree with his messages this week - Thank Trump , if not blame Trump. But ffs don't give Starmer any credit because none is deserved!
As an aside he said he was including Intelligence services in the Defence budget , not sure if that will be an accounting sleight of hand and this might not be quite what it seems . No doubt some journey will do the detective work.
All that said, despite the overwhelming stench of hypocrisy I welcome his messages this week. We debate these issues in the hope of changing someone's opinion or course of action , we should be happy when they do so. Everyone is entitled to do so , as a young man I was Far Left lol. God help me.

Two tier Keir strikes again.

Right so you’re arguing about the implementation then? I said exactly the same thing. I don’t disagree with the policy though.

Yer dead right with that, BJ, except for the last bit! Have they ever served the public? Have they ever counted themselves as public servants?
