I have to wonder how getting people with long covid and disabilities leads to growth. First thing is will businesses even want to employ someone with those issues? Each employer has to have a workplace HR and disciplinary code. If they take someone on and they fall under that code its just cost and repeated meetings to apply the disciplinary requirements to sack them. That will not lead to growth - just tax the rich, tax the earnings on shares equal to income FFS - stop pussyfooting about

I’d suggest most won’t defend it, right or left. Personally I’d like to see the detail rather than the spin.

I know you have a personal interest in this and understand your concerns. I’d be very surprised to see those who have genuine claims, coming in the firing line.

We do need to reform how we do business in an area that has seen huge growth in people being unable to work. Why isn’t there a GRoW scheme in place for these people, do we just leave them by the wayside at a cost to the tax payer?

As an example: a couple live opposite my mother-in-law and own their house. They have now acquired another house which a close family member lives in, doesn't work and gets the rent paid by the council. Public funds are effectively paying the mortgage and so the couple will eventually own 2 houses, one of which the daughter has been living in and getting her rent paid. And they are not the only ones. Now, to me, that is where they should be starting reform as this will almost certainly gain acceptance as the first step to reform.

The numbers are very different in this parliament - whether that makes a difference, I don't know, but the landlord MPs are nowhere near as powerful.

The Tories wouldn't have been anywhere close to a majority without their landlords in the last parliament. Labour could take out all their landlords and still have a 100+ majority.

Thats only an issue if you are your typical, get a few houses and use as a future pension type investor. Wealthy people dont pay these interest rates. They borrow against assets at much lower rates.

My son's situation is perhaps a snapshot of this country at this time;
My son is 42 and recently returned to the UK very unwell, after working in the Czech Republic for 8 years.
He has no fixed home as I live in a studio apartment and there's no room. Thankfully, his half sister (who has 3 kids) lets him sleep on her sofa for 3 nights and then he has my flat when I'm not here.
He tried to work. Managed it for a few weeks with an ex manager, but his mental health has deteriorated because of his living arrangements. He was self employed at this time, earning good money, but can't rent privately because the letting agents want evidence of 12 months self employment invoices. Then he had to leave work because his mental health was getting worse because of no fixed base.
So we have tried getting a flat together. Again, his absence from the UK is proving difficult for the checks that they do and my income alone is below some of the rental requirements. So the letting agents then want a UK home guarantor. I have some relations who are UK home owners but have declined because of the credit rating effect.
So we are now at an impasse. With my son's mental health getting worse by the day.
He got a GP appointment this morning, but it was with a mental health practitioner who gave him a fit note but said he can't prescribe meds. Oh, and who also suggested "talking is better than tablets"

I fucking despair, I really do.
