Spot on JMG. Personally I believe this development would have occurred with or without City or PSG. It was inevitable once American ownership of clubs with sway took off and the corridors of football power were filled to tipping point with the vile self interested and corrupt. We will essentially have our finances at the whim of the clubs who have been trying to fuck us for 10 years.
Not a chance this ends well for City
City and PSG have acted as an accelerant. The disparity in the super rich English TV deals and inflated transfers etc has also rocked the foundations. If we sign up we become poor relations and if we don’t we become even poorer. For supporters of a certain age like me it’s another blow to what I have cherished for over 50 years.
Unfortunately for me and maybe other likeminded posters the people orchestrating the changes don’t give a shit about the older generation of fans Coz we won’t be paying the bills in 10-15 years. They also don’t give a shit about the history and heritage or what happens to clubs beneath their lofty perch. And generally speaking today’s youth have a different perspective on supporting a club. Look at any footage of games from the 70s and 80s. The age profile of attendees was far younger than today. Many of today’s ‘fans’ don’t go to games and maybe can’t because they live thousands of miles away.
In the short term this proposal would give the pigs at the trough opportunity to pay down debt, maximise dividends and maybe even strike super lucky with asset sales. Hell it might even influence impending transfers.
it’s another manifestation of the ‘advancement’ evident in other traditional sports - cricket with the IPL, Rugby Union and cricket with central contracts, athletics with the Diamond League et al.
I do predict though, that if it does take off the cozy arrangement will implode in a few years because some animals will always want to be more equal than others.
I will watch with interest how it plays out but I just find myself getting more and more disillusioned. Thank the lord for the last 10 years.
